A/C Question

Our Berkshire came with 2 13500 A/C units. Is it feasible to replace them with 1500s, and would it make a difference?

Yes, you can replace the 13.5k btu AC's with 15k btu AC's and I believe that it would make difference. How much of a difference depends, naturally, on the outside temps. If you do a lot of camping in very warm climates, the change will help.

Just my opinion but I would try changing just one at a time and see if that helps. That would save you some money. Jerry.

I ordered mine with 2 15k heat pumps and in the summer with temps in the upper 90's, I'm able to keep the coach in the low 70's... The difference between the 13.5's and the 15's is the temperature of the air coming out of the vents. The pressure of the air is the same but the temp is lower.

We are in Fort Myers FL and it's been 90 the last 4-5 days. We have no shade and have two 13500 AC units. We have been able to keep the temp inside at 73-75 all day. Things we have done awning on all windows. Sunscreen on windshield and door also drivers window. Sunscreen on the slide out side windows. We keep our big awning out also. One thing I read about but haven't tried was to pains the skylight with a plastic white paint. Reports are that keeps the bathroom cooler. The front catches lots of sun so the sunscreen is very important.

I replaces my front ac heat exchange when it died on warranty. Paid the difference to upgrade to 15.

I had looked at putting a third unit in the kitchen vent.... was told that the roof was not designed for.weight.

Possible problem with 2 15s is power. Especially if.you only hame.30 amp

You can't run 2 15k units on 30 amp.

Berkshires are 50 amp units. As for the weight, I've seen where 2 techs were walking on the roof of a Berkshire at the same time.

I've had about 8 people on my roof in the infield of Charlotte for the NASCAR race. I only ask that everyone is spread out and not in one spot and have never had an issue with weight on this coach with a fiberglass roof or any of my other ones with rubber roofs.....

My last motor home had a 5500 watt Onan(30amp) and I was able to run both my 13.5's and also my friend was plugged into me and he ran his 13.5 also along with our TV's, refers and stereo.... Never popped a CB in 72 hours of generator use while dry camping in Michigan for a race....

Phil, love the shades on the bedroom windows. Sometimes, when I get a chance, I like to sleep late. Those would help me.

They were a great idea that Pro Shade had. The installer was putting up our awnings and suggested them. Two days latter they were back putting them on. One advantage to going to the FMCA rally's.

Just changed out a Duo-therm 13.5 btu for a 15 btu last week on our 2008 Georgetown. Both A/Cs were 13.5 btu units, and the one in the back would run, but would not cool. A mobile RV company checked it and said low on Freon and couldn't be charged so I paid the difference on warranty and upgraded to a 15 btu Duo-therm. Also paid to swap the good front 13.5 unit to the rear and put the new 15 btu unit on the front. Hasn't been real hot yet, so can't say if it cools better as both the old 13.5 btu and 15 btu units have air coming in a 40 degrees when 80 degrees outside. Perhaps will notice the difference when it gets hotter. One difference noticeable is the outside appearance where the box over the unit is smaller on top of the MH. Also, the newer unit is a little quieter. Thought it would be better to have the bigger A/C on the front if we had to use while driving down the road on a hot day.

They are held with snaps. I never take the off except to wash the rig or the windows.
