Adding Oil

Does anyone need to add oil between oil changes? I have around 20000 miles on and have the oil changed every spring. I never get to 15000 miles. I checked it today preparing to leave tomorrow and it's between full and add. I did shut off the motor and walk back and check it so it might have to settle a second or more to get an accurate reading. I've never added oil just curious.

Mine takes a while to settle back down.
Not sure how long, but when I had the oil changed the shop showed me it was full on the dipstick.
When I checked it a few days later it was over full.

I thought so also Dan. I check it every trip and have never add oil. I thought diesel motors tended to use a little oil.

Phil I had to put 2 qts in after I took possession I thought that was odd not that it took 2 qts because that's what it is from add to full but because no one else checked it.

This may not apply here, but my Dad always told me to check diesel engine oil while it was running. He operated Caterpillar heavy equipment, like bulldozers, etc

No additions for oil here either, but I'm only doing about 6k miles a year.Rich

We've done 14k since June. Had changes but never had to add oil in between changes.

New modern engines are absolutely amazing, compared to 1950, 1960, 1970 stuff.

My Mirada has 60k on it, no oil between changes.

My Toyota and Honda both have over 200k, no oil between changes.

Never had to add oil between changes. I do however have a question for you. You say that you change the oil every spring. Does this mean that you change oil after taking it out of winter storage?

I have always been told that you should change oil before storing the unit. This not only removes grime but more importantly acids that can eat away at an engine when sitting for.long periods of time.

That was true for Cat equipment. In northern winter operations they couldn't be shut down and had a running mark on the oil dipstick.

I agree with you and would change mine before storage but I don't store mine. I take it to beautiful sunny warm Florida. That was subtle?

Guys and Gals Phil's at it again trying to make us feel bad ........it's working.
With today's oil technology I am not sure that philosophy holds water. Much like you have to change oil in your car/truck every 3000 miles that's not true. Plus I have a service that comes to the house it is enjoyable watching them laying in the snow than before the snow falls. I put that in for Phil's benefit because I'm sure he has forgotten what it's like.

Well gentleman (and ladies) I for one enjoy the snow and can't ever get enough. Florida, Arizona, who needs all that stress of figuring out which tee shirt to wear everyday
