Bunk house slide won't open - 2014 390BH-60

Hello All,

My name is Mike and just the other day I tried to open the bunk house/wardrobe slide and it only opens/extends like an inch and then gets stuck, making a gear stripping sound until the button is released. The slide can then be successfully closed/retracted.

My question is what should I do first? Should I contact Forest River first or go ahead and get an RV repair shop to take a look at it?

I've been checking out the forum and have learned a lot so far. I have a propane tank story to relate but that's for later.

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
Mike

Let me also add that I have checked for any obstructions. Nothing found.

That slide operates on a cable system. I'm not sure if it has any gears. Mine broke at the electric motor shaft. I had to get it replaced at my dealer, it was still under warranty.

If yours is still under warranty you should go through your dealer.

Thanks Campin Cajun. I'm stopping by a dealer tomorrow @ 10 AM for them to take a look at it.

Sounds like the common gear box problem a lot of us have had. I had to have mine replaced about a month after I got mine. FR will stand behind it as it is a known issue.

Mike,
Congrats on your new coach and welcome to the Forums! Norco, the manufacturer of the motor/gear box that drives the slide, had a bad batch of motors. Yours probably falls in the date range of the bad motors. As Glenn mentioned, this is a know issue and will be repaired under warranty.
Again, welcome.
Tom

Hey Glenn. Thanks for the reply. You are correct. I got on the phone with Mitch today @ Forest River and he is going to ship out a new gear box to my local service center.

Have a great day.

Hey Tom,

Thank you! This is my first time joining a forum other than a programming one! My family and I have been living full-time since February and love it.

I will post back here with the results.

Take care,
Mike

Well, my wardrobe slide did it today. Sounds like s dtripped gear as others have said.
But mine is not a bunkhouse, but a RB rear bedroom model 390RB.

Do you guys know if the RB is the same Norco type slide mentioned above that had the run of bad motors?

My local dealer is not very friendly to owners that did not buy from them and I had hoped I would not need to get warranty work from them.
But I can't wait till next Goshen for this problem.

The wardroom slide on the bunks that everyone keeps mentioning is a cable type slide. If the slide on yours has 4 cables visible from the outside of the coach when the slide is open, then it is probably the same motor as mentioned. The BH's have three different slides on them. The two living room slides are hydraulic, the bed slide is an electric slide gear driven I believe and the bunk slide is the electric motor with cables the keep breaking on everyone. Hope this helps.

As someone whose bunk gears stripped too, I really really really wish FR would have put the hydraulic mechanism on the bunk slide. That's a big slide and I'd just feel more comfortable, having had it fixed once already

I agree and I actually wish all the slides would be hydraulic.

Yea, the slide mechanisms seems to be the same.
My wardrobe side is the cable system.
But it is only a small slide for the wardrobe.

I had the impression that on the BH that it was a much larger side with the bunks in it.

The bunk/wardrobe slide on the BH is actually pretty large. It is the full length of the bunks and also the full length of the bedroom where the drawers and tv / upper cabinets are.

Sounds like my slide out is about half the size of the bunks.
I was surprised the motor had a problem since it is so small>
This is the whole thing.

I have a 2014 Berk and my gearbox broke one week out of warranty. I did some research on the problem and posted it here:
http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...tml#post735791

I am going to carry a spare motor/gearbox incase it goes out again while on travel. I am also going to try adding the motor controller ... assuming my Berk does not have one, if it does then I am going to adjust it way down.

Just had this problem on my 2011 Berk! Tried to open slide and back cab door had opened above washer/dryer on a quick stop and the cable snapped when I tried to open. Lesson learned to check slides for any obstruction or it will get costly
