Cadillac SRX as a Toad

Is anyone out there toading a Cadillac SRX AWD?

I was looking at the Blue Ox site and it talks about trimming the bumper and having to remove 3 fuses when towing.

Is this a difficult vehicle to outfit and tow?

Hello DJ. If you have already conducted the research to ensure yourself that the SRX can be flat towed and what procedures must be followed to not damage the vehicle, you are halfway home. The next step will be determining which base plate is required for that particular vehicle. There a few different popular brands on the market, but when I did it for my towed (a Nissan) I stuck with a Blue Ox base plate because that is the tow bar I had purchased. I don't know too much about the other brands, but the Blue Ox base plate "fit guide" and install procedures are available for viewing on their website. Once you determine which base plate fits the SRX, the PDF will tell you how much is involved (to include any trimming of the fascia) in the base plate install. The other issue will be determining the wiring for the lights. There a couple of different options there as well.

Nope I have a Lincoln MKX. It was between the Lincoln and the Caddy. The deal was better on the Lincoln. Both used.

Don't forget to look into braking solutions, too. Lots to choose from. I tow a Jeep and went with the Blue Ox base plate and tow bar, then added the Invisibrake to that. Love it!

Yes, I flat tow my 2011 Cadillac SRX 2WD though. I paid for the instal and wires to be run for the lights. No cutting the bumper from what I remember and looking at it now, doesn't look cut either. Very easy to set up for tow also, I run the car for a few minutes, turn it off, pull the shifter boot up (sounds scary but very easy), Press the release button and place the car in neutral. Replace the shifter boot and close the door. Done! Once done, place in park and start the car. Run it for about 5 minutes before driving. Check iRV2.com Some good info there for towing an SRX. It seems it can be done, depending on year and whether or not it is equipped with a turbo.

What does a turbo have to do with the ability to tow an SRX? Enquiring minds want to know!

From what I see, all the new style SRX's (2010-present) can be flat towed. And like I stated earlier, I've been towing my 2011 since new and it's easy and never had an issue.

Apparently, the transmission is different in a turbocharged model.....owners manual says "no flat towing this model." GM should know their own cars. I didn't write the book!

The things that make a car able to be flat towed or not can run the full gamut, believe me. If I had to guess, and this is a total guess, I would say the turbo is probably lubricated from the engine lube system but "spun" by the transmission. If you spin a turbo with no lubrication, you'll definitely find out about it. Totally believable to me.

Turbochargers are "spun" by exhaust gases. Most likely there is a difference in the driveline that is required by the higher output of a turbocharged engine, much like the 340 Cummins uses a 2500MH Allison transmission, but the torque output of the 360 Cummins exceeds the torque rating of the 2500MH and is given the 3000MH. The turbo transaxle probably requires the engine to be running the trans pump for lube while the normally aspirated transaxle will get enough lube without the engine running.

Just a guess: perhaps the inter cooler for the turbo is in the way of the base plate.
