Anyone have a suggestion on a good place to camp during Thanksgiving... Want to leave the East Texas area for a few days...

Casinos to the east and San Antonio out west. Or how about Garner State Park in Concan. 9 hours to the white sand beaches of Destin. I wish I had time off.

How far do you want to go? Maybe Garner State Park?? Haven't been that way in a while. Maybe Dinosaur Park in Glen Rose?? Cooler weather would be good for "walking with the Dinosaurs".

Any particular direction you want to head towards? If you don't want to drive too far...... We have several great state parks over here in the north central and northeast Louisiana area.....as well as a very nice parish park.

1. My favorite park. We're camping there this weekend. If you geocache, there are 23 located here alone:

http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ilakedarb.aspx

2. Claiborne is good too, just don't get one of the double pull-thru sites

http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ilakeclai.aspx

3. Lincoln Parish Park is nice, with full hookups including sewer. It is close to town, and has nationally recognized mtn bike trails if you like that.

http://park.lincolnparish.org/

Also, are you looking for area things to do, or plan to stay near the camper to just relax?

Thanks for all the responses... Up until two weeks ago my wife was in the hospital for 90 days with 47 in ICU.... So - we're just looking for a place that won't take hrs to get there (more than 8-10hrs); we love woods, lakes, rivers, etc... Just somewhere we can sit out with our dogs and chill... Maybe sit around a fire at night....

Wherever you decide to go, you should make reservations soon. Thanksgiving week books early everywhere! Where are you in East Texas?

Any hospital stay is bad enough but 90 days must had seem like a lifetime. Glad to hear she is doing much better. Hope you find the right place to enjoy as she continues to heal.

If you head south on 59 there is a really nice Federal park in Coldspring called Double Lake Recreation Area. It is about 3 1/2 hours from Tyler. In the same area is Wolf Creek operated by the Trinity River Authority.

Garner State Park is about a 6.5 hour drive from Tyler. If you've never been there, I think this will fall very nicely into your description of what you want. There are also a couple of other parks around there in case Garner SP is filled up (very likely). We stayed at Parkview Riverside RV Park and really enjoyed it. The Frio River is beautiful and it is really peaceful there. I'll try and get a couple of pictures up later when I get back to my computer.

Glad your wife is on the mend, and keep us posted.

Ah yes, we've stayed at Wolf Creek twice. First time in the "circles", second time on the waterfront. Waterfront was by far the nicer place. Here's a picture of that (in my old TT and red truck):

And as promised, here's Parkview Riverside which is right across the river from Garner State Park. This was our first "real" camping trip after getting the TT. And we were hooked, for sure.

This is our camping spot. Right behind the fence there is the Frio River:

And this is the Frio River. The Cypress trees are pretty magnificent. We truly had a great time there.

Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in Fredericksburg. You can spend days around there, plenty to see and do. They only have a couple small planes takeoff next to the park every day, so it is mostly quiet.

You are at the gateway to Hill Country. You can even bring the fidos onto the porch at Auschlander. The food is terrific, and Chloe, or dacshund is an instant hit there.

We've stayed there and would agree it was most enjoyable. Just riding around the local lanes is very nice.

If you want to go a little north, Degrey Lake in Arkadelphia and Maumelle Park outside of Little Rock are nice. Maumelle is a Corps of Engineers Park right on the Arkansas River.

Hello neighbor , we are in Lindale.

Typically in the 40's - 60's, even 70's, but could be rather nasty also. There have been some ugly ice storms come through during Feb/March.
