Check Engine Light - Berk 360 QS w/MBE

After a summer of gate attendant duties, we fired up the Berk to begin our winter snowbird migration. I was greeted with a check engine indicator after a brief period of idling. Took it in to a local shop for annual service, but they could not decipher the code - something about a 'proprietary error' is all they could read.

Anyone have any experience with Scangauge or UltraGauge readers on a MBE 900-330? The scanners are recommended in another thread, but I don't see anything that says they will tell me anything about this Mercedes.

I'm also getting a water in fuel indication. No water found in fuel, filters changed.

Any thoughts?

John

I was once told by a guy from the FL hotline that if you get a check engine light or other warnings after sitting up for a while that the best thing to do is get it out on the highway and drive it like you stole it. As long as it's not a red check engine light.

Kind of had that thought in mind after an exorbitant service charge ($884) for mostly annual PM. Drove it pretty hard for 2 hours, camped for the weekend, then another two hour trip with some pretty substantial hills. Still have check engine light and WIF indicator. All other gauges/indicators were normal during the trip.

You can try a reboot. Disconnect it from the batteries for about 5 minutes, reconnect, then crank her up to see if you still have the warnings on.

John,

Two things. I have the ScanGuage D and it works perfectly well for the MBE (we have same rig). In fact, it too will provide the "proprietary" Mercedes codes as well and you can call the ScanGauge service number to get special codes deciphered. Very easy to use and provides lots of real-time gauges as well. I have had two instances since purchase where it showed codes - one was a cooling issue building up that I was allowed to solve before getting out on the road last year.

Secondly - last year we got WIF light after our annual service. I can't locate the receipt just this second, but as I recall, either the sensor had failed or the connector to the sensor had failed. Regardless - it was an inexpensive fix - under a hundred bucks. I hope yours is that easy as well.

An update for the record: Reset did not solve the problem nor did codes provided by my newly-purchased ScanGauge D. A call to the ScanGauge company netted a code assigned to a Power Takeoff. So much for easy fixes. Now sitting at a Freightliner shop in Springdale, Arkansas 8 hours into troubleshooting. This is going to hurt....

That's no good! The one time I had to call Scan Gauge, I guess I was lucky that they had enough information to tell me what to look at. Please keep us posted! Good luck.

Getting closer. End of day 1 shop report. There are broken wires within wiring harnesses running from the front if the coach to the engine. One broken ground wire (undetermined purpose) and one open wire connecting engine computers and sensors/gauges. Wires appear to have been pinched at anchor points. Day two of troubleshooting continues.

The good news: the broken wire(s) were, indeed, the cause of the errors. The bad news: I'm going to need a second mortgage to get the coach out of hock.
