Coolant/Anti-Freeze

Hi All-

Taking the rig out of winter storage and the 'low coolant' light is on. Engine kicks itself off after a minute. Trying to find the right coolant to put in and top it off. I've called Forest River, Cummins and Freightliner. Freightliner told me I can get any coolant off the shelf at NAPA, AutoZone etc, as long as it is Ethylene Glycol Based, Heavy Duty with SCA.

Just wondering if you have topped of your coolant, what did you use? And if I buy pre-mixed, I don't need to worry about the 50/50 dilute ratio, correct?

I have the Cummins ISB 6.7 340.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Mike

My only concern would be if it is dexcool or the regular stuff. Dexcool is pink vs green for the other. You can't mix the two. Jerry

cummins use FleetCharge. You can get it at Tractor Supply if one is near you.

That's why I recommended polyfreeze.
Works either way regardless of color or style.
It's also precharged for diesel.

Thank you for the help. I was able to find Fleet Guard with SCA right down the road at an auto store. Same color. Pink.

As always, appreciate the help.

Mike,
Not sure that Fleet Guard and FleetCharge have the same chemical make up. Make sure that you check it out before you add it. As was posted earlier by silver, Freightliner puts FleetCharge in the coaches we have. I would call the Freightliner help line to double check what should be used.

You may also want to determine why the coolant is low - loose hose clamp, leaking gaskets, etc. Last thing we need is to have the engine shut off while cruising down the highway to our favorite vacation spot.

Mine was low last year after sitting all winter. My diesel mechanic advised me this is a normal occurance and to add to the line in the spring.

This primarily from a "cold leak"
@ a hose fitting .
My semi tractor does it every winter.
Never add coolant in the summer but in the winter yes.

If it is low in the summer, why can you not add?

Are you talking about yours specifically or in general?

Yes mine specifically,
All summer long the tank remains full
Once it starts to get cold the tank will go down some.
Eventually I'll have to add because it's low enough that it goes into limp mode.

That's weird to say the least.

Sounds like a faulty pressure cap.
