DEF useage

Finally got the 38A back from the dealer after 3 weeks with temp.repairs to the Lighting issue,Freightliner is still trying to locate a replacement wire harness to correct the problem. We are leaving for Fort Wilderness in 10 days and my question is about with the 340 Cumming and how many miles are you able to go per gallon of DEF or how much DEF per tankful of fuel.

most vehicles use DEF at a rate of around 2% per gallon of fuel

I don't know about per gallon, but you can go across the country on a tank of it.

50 gallons diesel = approx. 1 gallon DEF per Cummins and my experience.

Oldkeywest91, the DEF system is not like your fuel tanks, that you can run down to near empty. If you do, you will need to get towed and the red engine symbol will come on. I get about 3000 miles on a tank of DEF. I have indicator lights near my fuel gage. 4 green lights full, 1 green light ok, turns to yellow - should have filled it at 1 green, yellow turns to red, don't stop the engine, will not restart, got about 400 to 500 miles (per Freightliner) till shutdown and having to get towed in.

Oldkeywest91,
We get about 350 miles (+/-) per gallon of DEF so if you are going to FW, you should use somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 gals of DEF for the round trip- estimating a 2500 miles trip. Your tank holds 13 gallons. This, of course, is just an approximation.

Using your numbers I would.suggest the following. If a full tank of DEF is 13 gal and you used 3/4 ... you used 9 gal of DEF in 3600 miles. Now I get about 1000 miles on a 50 gal dsl tank
So over your distance you would have used 3.6 tanks of dsl or 180 gal. 9 gal of DEF for 180 gal of dsl is a ratio of 5 percent Def per gallon of dsl.

Lefaiver, Are you saying you get 1000 miles on 50 gals of Diesel? Is that with your Motorhome? get about 1100 on 100 gals if Diesel with my Motorhome and I thought that was great!

I just added DEF for the first time. It said I had 200 km till empty. Went to Flying J for the bulk DEF. Added 7 litres around $5.00 CDN. My display said I had 900 left on the tank being full. Now this is a new truck. The regen happened just as I was shutting down, it did it again when I started later so I used up a cleaning cycle. I think I am going to get a small gas can and fill this and refill when needed.

what would be the purpose of the gas can? You can go a few thousand miles on a tank of DEF and it's not hard to find in 2.5 gallon jugs. Contamination is a big issue so you don't want to be using any type of containers. It also has a shelf life. Also, regen and DEF have nothing to do with each other. 2 different systems. Regen uses diesel to burn off soot.

That does not make sense. A regen should not occur until 10's of 1000's of miles, certainly not in one week of new. And, DEF is not consumed during regen, diesel fuel is.

I just drove 1900 miles from Charleston SC to Cheyenne Wy. When I started the trip I topped off the DEF tank. I filled the Def here in Cheyenne and it took exactly 5.9 gallons to top off. That equals about 320 miles per gallon. There is pretty good range on the Berk for DEF usage.

I believe the common "rule of thumb" is one gallon of DEF to 50 of fuel.

For me I think it is closer to 180 miles per gallon of DEF. I just did a 1900 mile trip and still have little more than a 1/4 tank of DEF.
