In my Cummins I've run Mobil Delvac 1 since the day i got it in 2003. Every engine in my yard has Mobil 1 in it, generators, lawnmower, four stroke weedeater, wife's van, daughter's car, literally everything.

I change it in my truck at 15,000 miles whether it needs it or not, usually every two years. When it was the daily driver it was 20,000, I had it analyzed a few times and all was well.

I have the most unique diesel out here. In winter, I use Amsoil 5W40 Full SAPS and in summer, I use Amsoil 15W40 High TBN. The North American specs call for 0W40, but the local VM expert thinks the oil is the reason why we are having rocker wear issues in NA (I replaced mine shortly after I nought her).

No diesels, but I agree, Mobil 1 in everything, even use it in oil cans and if I change the oil (rarely), save the used for the chainsaw chain.

Rotella T in the Berkshire. Once a year before I put her to bed in the winter. (I put less than 15k on the coach per year). This is what Cummins recommends, so I follow the program. I was told that the reason for such a lengthy period for oil changes was related to the volume of oil involved.

Understand that.... But like everything else in life, people become VERY brand loyal.

I remember I dad always to me, "Billy, never buy a Ford; there no damn good". I was OK with that until in my early 20's when I asked dad if he'd ever owned a Ford.

He replied "Oh Hell, no..... Are you kidding??? they're no damn good!!!"

I've seen those attitudes displayed in trucks, computers, (Apple vs everything else), motor oil, etc, etc, etc.

Interesting, no?? Would make for a fine study in human nature!!!

On my 2010 I find the del vac most convenient because of the spout on the jug and the limited space where they located the oil fill. Mine is up at the top if the engine bay, too high for a normal funnel.

Oil is Oil...it is FAR more important to change it on time than which one you choose. Get whatever is convenient for you and meets the specs for your Cummins, then change it at proper intervals.

as you can see oil is a funny thing. I will say that the brand name isn't the big think, The BIG THING is change It as per the manufactures guidelines.

Synthetic oil should not be used in the vehicle until you have about 30k miles on it.

Even at that time .... unless you put on a lot of miles each year ... synthetic is a waste of money.

The big advantage of synthetic is the fact that it takes longer to break down.

If you are the typical rv user that drives 6 to 10k per year... it makes more sence to change oil once a year before putting it into storage ... With regular oil

Synthetic has far more positives than the time it takes to break down. Higher shear strength, lower friction properties, thermal stability (Very important when flowing through a hot turbo.) are only some of the benefits.

Don't know where you get the 30K figure or the other things you state. I was personally told by Smokey Yunick in 1978 to drain the oil & change the filter when I got 3000 miles on my new 78 chev pu and put Mobil1 in it. I took Smokey's advice then and have done the exact same thing on the 8 or 9 new vehicles I've owned since then with no problems. I have Mobil 1 in the engine, trans, and rear end in everything. Costs me about $30 for oil/change every 15k miles.

I agree with Mr Knight and "Coot" in responding to Lefaivre(no offense, OK?). BOTH in terms of science AND ecology, btw. The cost of any synth today is coming down and dino oil is going up so for the few bucks diff it MORE than makes sense to use synth! Try Walmart synth(tec) in your cars at least...very cost effective! I've seen severe stress tests on old engines using synth vs. dino oil until complete failure and the synth engines far outpaced the dino oil engines...that sez it all to me. Again, thank the Nazi's during the war for "having" to invent this kind of oil so that their tanks and trucks could survive the trek to Stalingrad across the Siberian tundra. Dino oil would have gooped up within the first 100 miles of that caper!
Anyway...yeah...no matter what...or oil...CHANGE the oil&filt...on schedule as per the manu's recco and ye all shall be fine! Don't forget the generator! -PB

PS: I change the oil&filt religiously around 2500 miles(if dino oil) on all my auto's. My
200,000 mile plus (dunno as the odometer quit long ago...) '95 Honda has the
cleanest looking cam and lifters as attested by two different techs...most recently
when I had the valve cover gasket changed...they were amazed! If synth oil is
used I wait till around 4000 miles dependent on driving conditions, of course. On
my Mercedes Blu Tec I will change oil & filter once a yr. before putting it to bed
around T'Giving. And oh...I have NEVER, EVER, had a smoking engine
or a "smoker" in my life(that's about 15+ vehicles, new and old!).
Other probs, yes, but NEVER...THAT! :]

The wifes 2013 Toyota Camry rolled out of the factory with synthetic and a 10,000 mile interval.
