Bob, Never really compared any. Bought the one that Dealer at time of purchase recommended. A little costly, with a $100 deductible, but to date in 4 years they have paid for every repair recommended that was outside of manufacturers warranty, which amounts to at least 3 repairs (that I can quickly remember - new hydraulic pump, new bed slide motor, and recently new Transmission Control Module). The only issue I face is that this extended warranty was for 5 years and/or 75000 miles. I hit the 5 years next year and am at 50,000 miles. Guess I need to be looking at the XLT with "you all"!!! Enjoy, and let me know (us) what you think of it.. Craig

Yahoo! My engine now cranks! I had a new TCM (Transmission Control Module) installed under the Allison warranty {another Yahoo!}. Superchief (Craig) and I had the same problem. Replacing the TCM fixed his problem as well.

I suggest that everyone reading take head of what to do if the engine will not crank; which might happen to you out in the middle of nowhere.

I noticed the problem when I went through the sequence of starting; namely key off to on, wait for glow plug light to go off and then to start - which it would not do. I found that if I turned the key quickly from off to start, the engine would crank for like two seconds. Sometimes this would have to be repeated to get the engine to start.

Of course, there could be other reasons that the engine will not start, but I suggest that you remember this trick.
Hank

Hank, Great news!!

For others who may have the same issue and are beyond the 3 year Freightliner Warranty, it is best to get in touch with Allison to get there 5 year warranty service (Hank correct me if this was not your case). From my experience, Freightliner will not "honor" the Allison Warranty and will not process it. Craig

I thought you both had 2500 Transmissions. Isn't the TCM made by ARENS or is that just the shift controller? In any event I think as I have been reading this thread and similar threads else where the problem is only on 2500 transmission chassis and I suspect the TCM is different from the 3000 transmission. I could be wrong.

More the likely the TCU is different between the 2500MH and 3000MH. Mine which was replace on my 2500MH is item 2 in the attached BOM.
