I had occasion to examine the fuel tank mounts on my Berkshire with a Freightliner XCR chassis. In that post, I noted that I could theoretically move the fuel tank backwards by a foot or more to solve problems installing a steering stabilizer.
But, the situation is a little more complex than that and it merits the attention of all owners of Berks with Freightliner chassis, even if they aren’t planning to install a steering stabilizer. So, I’ve started a new thread about this issue.
I’ve attached a photo taken from below my Berk, and behind the fuel tank, which is on the left. It shows the enormous space in which the fuel tank can be enlarged from 100 gallons to 150 gallons, or moved backwards to give more room to install a steering stabilizer.
But, the photo also shows that the tanks is almost hitting a plastic box that is held in place by a zip strap. I’m tempted to trim that box back a bit, but you can see that it forms a conduit that holds some pretty important stuff, which might be the Freon lines for the AC, or the heavy 12v wires that connect the generator to the batteries, and a host of other things. The fuel lines don’t seem to go through there, since they are the curved lines sitting above.
So, I recommend that you have a look at this when you get under the coach to do your annual grease job. Make sure that it isn’t rubbing against the tank. I’ve banged on this, and I’m convinced that it is plastic rather than metal, so I don’t think it would quickly put a hole in the tank, where it would rub at the top.
