I know this thread is old, but I wanted to post the fix to the problem.

I first had Freightliner work on this fuel gauge issue in late 2012 - warranty work. They replaced some sensors in the fuel tank. That did not correct the problem. A couple months ago, I had them look at it again. This time they replaced the fuel gauge in the dash. That solved the problem.

I wait until I hit a TS where many lanes are open and then just pull thru the lane in the opposite direction. Nobody has ever so much as given me a dirty look.

I top mine at about 3000 miles and it's never taken more that 7-8 gallons. I think it takes about 2 gals for every 100 of diesel.
