Gas Gauge

I have a 2011 390 BH. When I top the tank off my gas gage needle reads a quarter tank over the full line. Is that correct?

Mine does almost the same, goes past the full line. Also noticed that when it goes down to the red line near empty I'm heading towards the gas station. When the low fuel alarm goes off We have about 10 gallons left. Too close for me. But found it's pretty close to being correct 1/2 is about 50 gallons.

Almost every vehicle I have ever owned has the fuel gauge needle go above the full mark when I filled/topped the tank. Then as fuel is burned, the needle starts to come down as it should.

Normal for most vehicles IMO.

This much over? Seems like almost a quarter tank! If so that's how the dealers get away from putting 25 gallons of fuel in when you first buy it. To the newbie the gage is on "F" so it must be full...

I can't say , but each vehicle I owned was over the full mark some. I just got used to it and never ran out of fuel.

Mine does not go above the full line but more of a concern ... Why would the two of you fill up without filling your DEF tank. I get very nervous when my DEF guage gets down to one bar. I have been told that if you ever run dry on DEF the engine stops ... no matter how much fuel you have in the tank.

I always keep a couple of gallons spare in my storage compartment as a safety measure

I have 4 boxes of DEF in the bay. I just haven't filled it yet. I've only been in the yellow once. I stopped and filled the DEF up. I don't let the DEF run out. As we all know it's a pain in the arse to add DEF unless they have it at the pump. I wait till the last green light is on then I fill. If I remember a full DEF tank should last for roughly 3000 miles. Correct me if I'm wrong.

We are a lttle behind the times up in Canada. We do not yet have DEF at the pumps so I use a plastic funnel fitted with and extra length of platic tubing.

I did find several truck stops in the States with DEF at the pump ... unfortunately it was always on the driver side (wrong side). Truckers do not look kindly on RVs going thru the lanes in the reverse direction.

That's funny! In the nicest way! I have never filled with DEF at the pump so I wouldn't know. I buy Blue Def at SAMs Club. I use the filler that comes with it.

If I remember correctly, there is a function in the computer to run through all the gauges to check their function. I'm not certain, but I think I remember having a calibration option in there too. Check it out.

Well in my case, my 2012 Ram 6.7L Cummins diesel does not use or require DEF and Tater never specified DEF so I assume he/she was speaking of the gasoline guage reading only.

This is exactly what my fuel guage has started to do. Also, if it's the same problem I have, when you first turn your key on and all the guages reset themselves or bottom out, the fuel guage does not reset to the "E" mark, but only makes it to the 3/16 mark. (between 1/8 (orange) and the 1/4 tank mark).

I had my rig into Freightliner to fix. They replaced the fuel sensor in the tank and that still did not fix the problem. They are going to try replacing the guage itself next time around.

The 'low fuel' light on the dash still works correctly. Comes on when there is actually 1/8 of a tank left. But the fuel guage is off by about 3/16 of a tank. When it reaches 1/2 full, I know I have about 1/4 of a tank left.

I never go below 1/4 of a tank as the generator will not run. At 1/4 it takes 70 gals of diesel.

Also have a 2011 390BH. Gas gage does stop at "F", and does not go over. I also have a DEF system. I have been done to yellow once on the gage and was concerned what happen when it went to red. Was told at Freightliner Camp that when it went to red, as long as you did not turn the engine off, your could keep going for about 200 more miles. Also told that if you did stop the engine, you would need to be towed. Never found out, if it went to red, did you need to fill the DEF tank while the unit was still running. Figured I didn't need that information as DW would not let me get it down to red. ;-)

Superchief

I have heard the same thing regarding DEF.

I was interested to hear you say that you have a 2011 with DEF since I had spoken to an other 2012 Berk owner with 6.7 ISB who claims that their unit does not require DEF ... even though his fuel guage has the DEF lights down below.

It was my understanding that all new diesel engine require DEF as some sort of new emmision regulation.

That would surprise me. I know some who have 2011 units, but built on 2010 Freightliner Frames, that do not have DEF. Have not heard of 2012 units without DEF. They might be in for a surprise when the red light comes on!

I can't speak for "all new diesel engines requires DEF...", but my 2012 Ram 2500 3/4 ton pick up with the Cummins 6.7 L diesel engine does not require DEF.

I do believe the Ram 3500 diesels do require DEF.

Just filled up my 2010 and the needle landed right on "F", and my wallet was right on "E". Taking it to College Station Texas for the A&M, LSU game!

set the trip meter each time and see how many gallons you use for a given fill up vs miles keeping in mind you know how many gallons the tank is.
