Generator output

Cross posting to the Berk forum...

House batteries were very low. 12 volt lights would work, but I needed to jump the generator with the chassis batteries to get it to start.

The remote generator monitor in the monitoring center had the "bulk" light blinking. The owners manual for the magnum inverter/charger explained that this could be due to overheated batteries or a low AC voltage input to the inverter/charger. I opened the battery bay and checked that the batteries were not hot. I left the bay open to ambient 70 degrees to be sure.

I checked the voltage to the batteries across the battery terminals, and it was only 12.7V.

The generator was able to run both air conditioners and the refrigerator at the same time, but the voltage to the batteries did not increase to the low 14V I'm accustomed to seeing during bulk charge.

I want to see what AC voltage the generator is supplying to the inverter/charger before I surmise that my inverter/charger is bad.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

This just happen to Boo. Happen to me last year. For some reason the magnum gets confused. Unplug electric from coach. Disconnect batteries from magnum. Wait for five minutes. Reconnect and it should work. Don't know why but has worked twice now. The reset on magnum will not fix. must totally disconnect. Let us know if it works a third time.

Mine has continued to work for over a year,

Does isolating the batteries using the manual disconnect switch in the battery bay work as a way to disconnect the batteries from the inverter?

The manual switch does not disconnect the inverter remote. The end battery terminal has to be disconnected.

Ok. So I should disconnect the red and black wires on the 12 V input side of the inverter? I ask for clarification because the post above refers to the remote, which seems to be the panel in the coach.

That would remove 12v to the inverter, just make sure no 110v is going to it. (No shore power or generator.) Also, be careful of the positive cable as any metal on the coach is probably ground.

No you have to remove the connection from the inverter. The batteries are always connected even when switch is off. This allows for charging of the batteries.

Just disconnect the battery negative...less risk, less hassle. Sounds like the unit is powered by the batteries so that as long as it is connected it can't do a hard reset.

I spoke too fast. Bulk light is blinking again. I'm going to reset it one more time.

Ok. The reset worked temporarily. The root issue was a bad cooling fan in the inverter/charger itself. With a new fan, the batteries are seeing higher voltages. The charger was shutting off output due to a high internal heat condition.
