When i travel 95 to nj i use 301. There is traffic and lights but it's probably almost as fast as 95. You save tolls and the hassle of traffic from DC to Del. Take 95 to exit 104 Va to 301. Follow 301 to 896 in De to US 1 N back to 95 to 295 over De memorial bridge to rt 40 E to rt 55.

Thanks for that info. I will look at that. It looks like once past Richmond you miss all the really bad traffic spots. Only tolls should be the chessapeak bridge and del memorial bridge. Is that right?

I stayed at seashore campsites twice. Very nice. A small farmers market just opened at the entrance for fruits, veggies, flowers. I think you have to pay for showers. Not too far from the ferry.

My only issue with this route is that the Harry P. Nice bridge from VA to MD on 301 is neither hairy or nice. It's not awful, but its definitely unpleasant.

The maps don't do it justice:

Depending where you are in SC, you might consider taking I-81 up through Shenandoah Valley, crossing over through Harrisburg, York, etc, and eastward to the Jersey shore., You'll miss a bunch of tolls, and a much more relaxing drive. Be sure to stop in New Market Va at Southern Kitchen for their Peanut Soup - indescribably delicious.

I live in the cape may area. The main campgrounds are Holly Shores, Beachcomber, Seashore, Cape Island, and Lake Laurie. The first 3 will be the best for amenities. They are all within a few miles of each other. As far as driving, while the Cape May- LEWES Ferry is pricey, but you can relax for 1 1/2 hour ferry ride and when u get off, you are within a 5-10 minute drive to all the campgrounds I listed.
