Hey guys, just ordered a Hughes Autoformer. Have been considering one for a while now and found a good price on Ebay and pulled the trigger. I have a Surge guard mounted in the power bay right now, and am planning on putting the Autoformer in there as well. Plan is to cut the original power cord and just use an extension from there when plugging in to shore power because there is not a lot of room left with the surge protector and autoformer both in the bay. Anyone else have any ideas?
Doesn't the Autoformer also act as a surge protector? Do you need both?

I believe that it does have some surge protection, but I think it's primary purpose is to provide protection from low voltage. From much of the research that I have done, most sources agree that both together are beneficial. Much of this research was subjective, however, and gotten from other peoples opinions from other posts.
