It's not too bad. It's a tall suspension bridge. Looks bad but the drive over it isn't too bad. The bridge on 295w is much lower but is longer, more bouncy, and usually more crowded.

I-287 (Tappan Zee) is a very rough and congested bridge (depending on time of day. Major commute route for NYC in the afternoon/evening). Then I-287/87 south through NJ to I-78 is nice roadway. Cabella's in Hamburg, Pa (I-78, Exit 29? Route 61) is HUGE (sits right at the exit on a hill.....can't miss it). They have a dump station, water and plenty of parking. They have restaurants on the second level that offers some interesting fare. Then continue on to the I-81 corridor. Much nicer drive IMHO once you get passed the Tappan Zee debocle.

yes, i hate that bridge, so, i take 295W to I-10- 301- 75 to sarasota

RK leaving from south Jersey we go over Del Mem bridge get on 95 to US1 S in Delaware. You'll cross over the Delaware canal right after the toll you take the first exit on to it's either 896 or 897 that will take you to 301. You follow 301 to 95 it brings you out above Richmond exit 104. Good fuel stop area. I've been using this route for years even with just my car. Avoids many tolls and it's a relaxing ride. I'll be headed that way the 30th. Jim

Area51: You cross the Tapanzee River Bridge? That bridge is way scary. It needs lots of work.

Yes, I-295 around Jacksonville has a high bridge (high enough for cruise ships and freighters to go under). It is a steep incline up and down. What makes it intimidating is that it is a "center tower suspension bridge" where the roadways are suspended on the outside of the support towers.

the tolls on I95 are high for a heavy vehicle and car (Georgetown 375 and MGB)
I will be going around I95 to Richmond Va then rejoin it
This is the first time any advice???

RKC0; I live in So. Jersey and do the Florida Trek every year. I di I-295, acrooss Del. Memorial and take exit 1A in Del.; for route 896 south (exit just before the tolls). 896 runs into 301 which has a short section of lights in Delaware.

Once into Maryland, it is a four lane divided road through farm country (beautiful). Make sure to stop at the rest stop (in center of island) just before the Chesapeake Bay bridge into Annapolis. Check out the beautiful marinas on the bay's east side.

After Annapolis (you are on 301/50), pick your poison; you can take 301 to bypass Washington (a lot of lights & towns), or take 50 to I-495 to I-95 (lot's of traffic, can be a bear), which I generally take. Stay extreme left getting on to I-95 to possibly get on the HOV. Depending on the time, it may be open southbound and may allow everyone. Check the signs.

If traffic isn't bad, no need then to take I-295 around Richmond.

Some fuel stops are: FJ @ NJ !-295 x2C, Loves @VA I-95 x4, FJ @ SC I-95 x 181B, Loves/FJ @GA I-95 x 29. Fuel prices are the cheapest in SC, followed by GA, the VA.

The traffic between XMAS and Jan is a huge evacuation from the north, all the way to Florida. I generally do the second week of Jan.

If I understand correctly, the HOV lanes are being converted to toll lanes and no longer allow towed vehicles of any kind. I think the OP said (s)he was pull a toad.

As has been said, it is a high bridge, but my underpowered, can't pull a 5er, 1500 Silverado maintained 58-60mph all the way up. I will never use the I295W or I95 thru Jacksonville again if at all possible.

Thank's for the info. Turning the HOV into a toll road might be a good thing. They say there will be dynamic toll rates; huh??? Rather the hijacking this thread, I will start a new one on the subject.

No thread needed- they adjust rates by time of day. Rush hour = higher cost; non-rush hour and overnight = lower cost.

301 is a better drive for sure. Bay bridge can be a pain sometimes.
