Jeep toad
I picked up a 2005 Jeep Wrangler and seeing a lot of options for towing hardware. Besides all the expensive "RV" options out there, can one use a simple "Smith Built" tow bar that pivots up and stays on the jeep?
Also does anyone have recommendations for light wiring setup?

Jeep dealers used to offer a tow harness that plugged into Wrangler for the vehicle to be RV towed. Make sure the dealer knows you want to tow the Jeep, not tow with it.

I used Blue Ox for everything except the aux braking system (which is Air Force One). Blue Ox offers a diode block that makes the wiring pretty easy. I would also recommend removing the steering wheel lock that actuates with the ignition key. Had a bad experience with my 2002 Wrangler when the wheels locked slightly turned and I scrubbed two tires really bad. The key was in the correct position for towing...really don't know how it happened but it won't again.

I have used Blur Ox with all the class A's that we have had. The are extremely easy to hook up due to the telescopic arm and the studs can be removed from the toad when not in use.

When choosing a tow bar get a all terrain model. Other than that they all work about the same. I would shop Roadmaster and Blue Ox and get the best price. Also you certainly can you the A frame tow bar. It's the cheapest way to go and will do the job just fine.

Look into Cool Tech for your wiring harness, they make it specially for Wranglers. It''s simple to install.
I believe it's Rugged Ridge that makes a front bumper that has attachment spots for a tow bar. Instead of buying a base plate, get the bumper. It'll look cool too!!!

Check out our pictures.. We tow our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon behind our Coach. Started out behind our CLass C and just upgraded to a Class A. Jeep is a great flat tow vehicle.
Demco is the brand we use with RV1 Brake controller. A little pricy but money well spend with safety in mind.

One more thing. Most if not all states require a braking system with a toad.. Plus tail lights and brake lights..

Thank you all for your inputs, always helps to talk it over. I've decided to go with the Roadmaster base plates since it (#1424-1) fits the 2005 Wrangler while only having to drill one hole. Yeah, that bumper looks real good JC, but I think I'll stick with the stock one for now. Haven't decided on the tow yet but all of them will require the same brackets on the jeep anyhow. What amazes me is that you can spend more on the brackets than the bar depending on which bar is selected, seems over priced to me...I could have made them back in the day!

The Warn front bumper will work with the Blue Ox without a base plate.
Also looks very nice.

New question on the Jeep toads far as hooking up. I have brackets installed and am ordering the Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar. Looking at the wiring kits now it is again becoming very convaluted as to what is plug and play for my 2005 Wrangler. Any familiar with this?

If you are talking about the wire harness for the tail lights look at CoolTech.com, I got mine from them for my '09 Sahara. They plug into the DS tail light, then all you have to do is run the wire to the front and hook up the plug to it.

Thanks CC but I checked with them already and they only have them from 2007 and newer.

I did that this afternoon NV245. I called them to verify compatability and whether it was plug and play, the answer to both was yes and I'll have it on Wednesday. Very friendly and knowledgeable! Thanks

Glad you were able to get "hooked up". I was going to suggest Mopar since Cool Tech didn't have one for you.

I got a Blue Ox Kit, cost about $195 but was well worth it. Pull the factory harness from each taillight and plug their harness in between, stuck the control box in the DS taillight well and ran the wiring to the front bumper. Slick as could be, no diodes, no splicing, etc.
