Mount Rushmore or Bust
We just returned from our put put West. Covered 5000 miles in 18 days. MA to Montreal, UP Michigan to Twin Cities to SD to Wyoming, Montana, ND, Thief River Falls, back to UP, Then back home through Montreal. Berk preformed well in some hellish winds, hail and rain. (I have a great appreciation for the Safe-T-Plus). Only one windshield, one exhaust tip (tailpipe), and one slide topper needing replacement to date. Spent 4 nights in Mount Rushmore. Kids had a Ball and loved KOA Palmer Gulch - many thanks to those who recommended it! We have a new appreciation for travelling in a motorhome and we're already planning next year.

Sounds like a great trip. 5000 miles in 18 days! I hope you had another driver to give you a little break. I thought 7700 miles in 31 days was a lot of driving.

I had really bad cross winds going to Devils Tower. My dinette slide topper unraveled do to the wind. Luckily it rolled back up as I pulled over. Does not look like anything broke or ripped.

I hear you. We had real bad cross winds leaving Devils Tower and across Montana and No Dakota. That's what finished my Dinette slide awning. I had a couple long nights non- stop. But yes, my wife drove for a couple hours on the way out to give me some shut eye. She was comfortable on the highway as long as it wasn't windy.

What town in MA do you live in if you don't mind me asking? I live in MA also and have driven by a house in a town that had a Berk exactly like yours if it wasn't yours. Just figured I'd ask to see if it was in fact yours or another Berk owner.

Sorry I just looked at your profile after I wrote all that and it must be another Berk owner with the same rig! The one I saw was in Mansfield.
Glad you had a great trip I plan on going to Mount Rushmore with my family next camping season!

No problem. So far I have only seen one other parked in Littleton, Ma. It's a great trip I would highly recommend it! Don't miss the lighting ceremony on Mount Rushmore it's worth staying up late and missing one campfire.

I see that you were in Medora. Did you do the evening show and Theodore Roosevelt Park? We loved Medora.

Hank,
We arrived in Medora late afternoon and in a monsoon. We were told the evening show was cancelled. We did Teddy Roosevelt in the morning when the sun came out and had a great ride through the park. Kids were able to see lots of Bison and up close too. We really like Medora also. Great Bfast place in the center of town. Best glazed fresh cinnamon rolls I have ever had.
Thanks,
Randy

Glad to hear that you guys had a great time. Thank you for posting. We went to the Grand Canyon last year and experienced some of the windy conditions that you spoke about. Please let us hear more about your trip when you have the time. Thanks,

Mount Rushmore is awesome and a must-see. There is so much to see in the area. Custer State Park is great (must see the eye of the needle on Needles Highway). We stayed at Spokane Creek Campground. Custer State Park is mainly for autos; you must get directions from the campground on how to get in with the motorhome. The great sights in the area were Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave Nat'l Park (cave not that great), Deadwood, Devils Tower; to mention a few.

Mt Rushmore is the first attraction of that type that I did not feel ripped off after eating. The hot dog stand was expensive but cafeteria was good food and cheap. Also the entrance pass is good for a while. (Season maybe)

Agreed, we went the first time to Mount Rushmore for bfast. Had a pretty good meal while looking at the mountain as a view. The parking pass is good for a year but only for that vehicle.
The Badlands also should be on the list of have to see. The kids enjoyed becoming "Junior Rangers" at many of the national parks.

I suggest the Cowboy Dinner show. Just did it over the July 4th week, it was great. Also, that KOA put our Camp Ground (Spokane Creek) to shame. Wish we had booked there.

On my way to Mt Rushmore now. Picked the worst week to visit the area. Sturgus motorcycle rally starts today. RV parks are super expensive this week, however we got a good deal at a Woodall rated park with a 9+ rating. Heartland RV Park in Hermosa, SD. Arrive Wednesday, August 10. They said we would see a bunch of motorcycles but they will leave 4 days after we get there. Our last 4 days should be less wild. Heartland is at the southern end of the bad lands and about 20 min from Mt Rushmore and 30 min from CrazyHorse. Going to spend 8 days touring all the attractions and going
to ride the 1880's train from Keystone to Hill City and back.

Spent 10 days there over the 4th. Good base of operations. A little noisy traffic but you get used to it. Pay the $20 for Custer state park. Good for a week and well worth it.

We just finished a trip to Mt Rushmore. Stayed at the Mt Rushmore KOA Palmer Gulch. Great place for families. We rented a car there as well.
Here are some pictures and videos.
