My Step Lights Mod

You Berkshire guys know a few of us were discussing how to keep the Step Lights on when the step switch was turned off.
Hank has already shown his solution by connecting the light to both the Isle and Porch light switch.

I was determined to have the lights come on and go off as the door was opened and closed. As it turns out, it was very easy wiring. Only had to splice 2 wires both located down under the steps.

I did use a strip of LEDs that I had left over from another project and left the stock original light as it was.

Here are a couple pictures and maybe a video:

LED STRIPS STUCK TO FIBERGLASS JUST ABOVE STEPS

FROM OUTSIDE

FROM INSIDE

WITH STEP SWITCH ON - STOCK LIGHT COMES ON ALSO AS STEPS COME OUT

From the LED strip, + to the Red, - to the Brown.

Great job, Dan. Was the red and brown wires in the cable bundle going between the controller and cabin? - Hank

Your steps must be Lippert (red=step power/brown=door switch). Door switch ground with door open. Will of course not work if one has Kwikee steps (door switch open with door open).

Right. there is Red, Brown, White and Yellow in the bundle.

You probably looked at them enough to know that Red is 12v and Brown is the magnetic door switch to ground.

Thanks' Dan; I must say that you are like a dog on a bone - you eventually get the job done - LOL.

I'm attaching the Coach Step wiring for others that may be interested:

As noted earlier, if you have Kwikee Step, the door magnet circuit is different. - Hank

However, for those that may want to accomplish this mod on Kwikee steps it should be noted that prior to 2/99 kwikee used a NC door switch and it is still available, part number 905312000 and available from American RV Company $12.00 (and others). Probably can be mounted on existing small door switch using existing single magnet or added to doors independently. Just a thought.

Hank and Bubbles, I had read the kwikee manual first and that is what took me so long to realize my lipert door switch went to ground when the door was open.
Once I finally figured that out it was stupid simple.

How is the Kwikee circuit different. I am trying to use a Stromberg Carlson controller on Kwikee steps and not working. What do I need to change to make it work?
