TaterColo are you just winging it for CG's or do you have reservations ? If winging it are you having problems getting spots?

Yes just winging it. Only made one reservation and that was for Yellowstone. Tetons would of worked if we got there earlier but the whole park was full. Had to stay 5 miles outside the park. Paid just over $100!!! Yikes.

we're taking our first big trip this week. Camped locally (90 min drive) and went to gettysburg (about 4 hours one way). All easy stuff - drive, camp for many days, drive home.
this time...8 hours to lexington, then 8 to memphis, then 8 to nashvill and 8 to get home. Memphis is the real destination but gotta stop someplace (not gonna try 16 hour drive...no way in one day). So spending a day in each of the 'halfway' cities. Gonna be interesting..setting up and tearind down every other day.
Plan was to get the wife driving the camper but that hasn't happened...got the 2 kids and a collie in the truck.
Must pack beer. Or maybe tequila.

The only way to travel. We start thinking about where we going to stay maybe 2 hour before we are going to stop for the night.
Has always worked for us. I even got 2 nights in Grizzly park in West Yellowstone in late June once without reservations.

I'd love to do seat of the pants..but afraid of overpaying or ending up in a truckstop or walmart parking lot. Had too many bad experiences not getting hotels in years past.
one cg is cheap ($35/nite) another not so ( a jellystone) but got a discount for booking early and in memphis will be at the graceland RV park and it's like $60/night if I recall.

Setting up and packing to go will not be that bad. Takes a bit of time but not a big deal.
My wife has driven the coach once for like 10 minutes. She hated it. I guess if I meet my demise someday she will have to call Good Sams for a tow. Lol!
Always have tequila for a backup!

BTW (traveling with no reservations) you need to be ok with staying at a Rest Stop (mind you there will be RIGS there with their engines running all night) or Walmart or National forest. That's how we travel. If I stay at a Walmart I usually keep my slides in. At a rest stop same thing but if its not that occupied I usually put the slides out. As for National forest you can go in as far as you dare to.

prof,
Better still, have the kids do the driving while you and your wife enjoy the tequila!! (LOL!!)

Stayed last night outside of Salt Lake. Now in Wyoming at the Veaduwoo campground. Really cool. Dry camping.

I didn't see anything about that. We found a spot we fit nicely in. Was able to keep the car hooked up.

We are about 3 hours from home and my 15 and 11 year old really wanted me to drive home yesterday. I told them if you could persuade their mom to drive the car home go for it but I'm staying here tonight. So they both were not to happy about that and decided to protest by not getting out of the RV for a hike.
So later yesterday I decided to do a "sit in". I made a protest sign and taped it to a stick. The dog even got into it. The girls laughed and eventually had a good time. Lol!
It says.
PROTEST!!!! I WANT TO GO HOME!!!!

It's actually the same tow dolly you would rent from Penske. I found this one on Craig's list and paid $400 for it. I replaced the fenders, straps and locking mechanism. I probably have all of $600 into it. It was a steal! This is a heavy duty tow dolly.
I was going to put 5 spoke aluminum rims on it but couldn't find any. Ended up at Walmart and found the hubcaps. I think it makes it look nice.
This link is if you want to buy new.

That's my daughters car. She turns 16 at the end of August but she had to have it!!! The British flag on top got her.
She did say we could tow it tho.
