Printer Offline

I have a Dell Laptop running Win 7 and Firefox or ie 11. When I try to print, nothing happens and the item just stays in the print queue. When I look at the printer it says 'Printer Offline'. It is online right after I boot up. If I shut the computer down, the item in the print queue will print. This is a Laser Jet 4000 Series PCL 5 printer. If I switch to my Office Jet 7300 printer, I can print. Any ideas as to why the printer keeps going offline?
Thanks.

How old is it?
Software up to date?
Unplug it for say 60 seconds and then restart it.

tmmar,

I had an older Laserjet that would take itself offline when a fault was detected - paper out or low toner, that sort of thing. I often could get it back working by removing the toner cartridge and putting it right back in, forcing a recycle...

Worth a shot!

JBoyer,
I uninstalled and re-installed the printer. I disconnected and reconnected the power cord and still have the problem. Will need to continue to trouble shoot.
Thanks

Is this a wireless printer by chance? I'm probably way off here, but ours is wireless. After dealing with similar "offline" issues, I realized that the computer and printer had to be on the same hot spot to work. Otherwise, mine says offline and won't print.

John,
Yes, it is a wireless printer and the laptop and printer are on the same wireless router.

Wireless radios in printers can fail. I've had it happen to to a couple of HPs. Running the wireless test (if your printer has one) should hopefully detect if there's any issues. If the radio is bad, then you're looking at a possible service call to stay wireless. Or, you can do like I did for my MIL, and just connect it directly.

Went through the 'Add a printer' setup again and installed the printer. It installed the printer as 'Copy 1' and it seems to be working (for now). So now it shows the original installed printer and the second one (the Copy 1). Hopefully this will resolve the problem for good.

If the "copy 1"works you can delete the first one and the copy will become the main printer.

Any luck with a driver update?

Driver it is using seems to be the most current one available. Also, I know that I could delete the old one now that there is 'Copy 1' installation available, but not taking any chances right now.

Here's what I recommend to anyone setting up a wireless printer: If you let the network assign an IP address to the printer initially, go into wireless settings and find the assigned IP address (for example 192.168.1.140.) Then, in the wireless settings there's an option (maybe manual setup?) change the IP address from automatic to static. You'll then have the ability to enter an IP address (it may already display the assigned number.) Be sure the IP address is the one previously assigned and save that as the static IP.

What I found on a windows setup was that, if during a power recycle, the router assigned the printer a different IP address than the one used when you added the printer to your computer settings, there was going to be a problem. Going to a static IP eliminated this issue.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details (switched to Mac a yr a go, mostly) but what I recall is that when you add the printer in Windows is creates a virtual LPT (printer) port, based on the IP number of the printer. If the printer powers off, it may get a new IP and that wasn't addressed in the setup. Static IP cures a world of hurt in this instance.
