Progressive EMS PT50

I have had this surge protector for several years now and I usually plug the protector in, turn on the breakers, and let it go through its cycle of checking the power at the pole before turning the breakers off and plugging into the protector. The last couple of days, the protector makes a clunking noise after I plug it in. It never did this before but it seems to be operating properly otherwise. I called Progressive and the tech said that it was normal.

Has anyone else who has this protector experienced it making a clunking noise?

Thanks for your input.

Tom

Mine too

Mine makes a definite clunking after it goes through its cycle and decides all is well and allows power through. Sounds like a relay clicking in. Mine has always done that.

Thanks. My concern is that mine has never done that before and I have had it for several years now.

I understand

I fully get it. We don't like when things change in our rigs after so many years. Good news is the 50 has a lifetime warranty.

I have both the hard wired EMS-HW50 and the plug-in EMS-PT50. Both of them make the clunk/click sound after the delay.

That sound is the relay. Inside, there is a big relay that is spring loaded. The springs keep the relay open which prevents power from passing to the coach. After the delay and all is good, the relay slams shut to pass the power on. I assume the relay is closed magnetically.

I would bet yours has always done it but you just didn't notice.

If mine has always done this, it has done it very quietly. It has been very noticeable the last 2 days. I have never heard it before the last night.

Tom - we have the same make and model rig. Whenever I plug into shore power, I get that clunk also. It's been that way since I bought it. I have always thought it was a normal connect/disconnect sound.
But I don't have the Surge Protector yet.
Regards,
Fred

Fred, I get the clunk from the coaches transfer switch when I plug into the power pole also. The new clunk I hear is coming from my surge protector.

I think it was clarified already... The EMS has a contactor inside. When it decides it is safe it closes the contacts and connects the RV.
