Rusted exhaust

Got a bit of a surprise yesterday. I changed the oil on my berk and found the tail pipe from the muffler/ def filter to the connection of the tail pipe was rusted completely thru. Has anyone else had this issue? Seems I should not have this issue on a 4 yr old berk. It appears they put heat wrap on the tail pipe section. I think that is the problem.

Maybe it's diffrent for motor homes but I thought emissions stuff is warranteed for 100,000 miles and 5 years or some th ing like that on most cars and trucks.

I agree with your assessment. I think the fiberglass heat wrap does more harm than good. Never liked it on the pipe.

I agree. That heat wrap traps the water and it rusted thru. Everyone check your berk and make sure yours is ok. I went by freightliner they are "checking into it" and will get back to me if it's under warranty. Has anyone replaced there's and kept the heat wrap off? I assume it's on there because of the dpf temps get high.

I got back from a trip last summer to find no more tailpipe. I took this picture to local exhaust shops, and found out that because it was a motorhome and they could not lift it, they would not attempt a repair. I finally found a NAPA jobber who reluctantly got me an elbow, some four inch pipe, insulating wrap, and a clamp. I ordered a polished tip from Amazon, and replaced the outlet in my driveway.

I posted this quite awhile ago. Had the same problem as you. There were lots of comments regarding the regen mode with the new section I put on but have covered more than 12,000 miles with no issues.

Seems like this may be common. I like the side exhaust tip. May have to try that. Did it have any impact on the regen for the dpf?

Yes, you are correct. The warranty is different for a Motorhome compared to a car or truck.

Our motor homes have a 5 yr 100000 mile warranty on emission control. What I have found out is the warranty covers the entire system -- except the last pipe that is rusted out on mine. Apparently freightliner delivers the chassis to Forrest river with out the last tail pipe. Forrest river or any other coach builder puts there own pipe on after the body is on chassis. Go figure.

Rknola, I thought the emissions stuff was a federal thing. I could imagine the other warranty stuff could be very different .

Seems like quite a few of you all have this issue. This to me maybe should be a recall? Kinda a huge safety thing that exhaust system gasses could get into the passenger get compartment because the pipe comes off under the vehicle?

This one should be easy, but might not be in the end. The question you need answered is since FR is the builder and the unit is titled as a Forest River whatever. Are they, FR the final builder making the completed unit covered as the final builder and the federal emmissions covered.

No issues with regen after 12,000 miles.

That section is nothing more than tail pipe. It really has nothing to do with federal laws on emissions.

It's not much different than the guys that pull all the DEF delete mods on trucks. The Feds just control was manufactures sell to the general public, once the public buys it, especially on Diesel engines is up to the public.

Now I am worried about the pipe that goes from the turbo. Apparently that has the wrap on it as well. I need to check that prior to the warranty going out.

The pipe replacement is 175.00. Just the pipe. I may try to order a elbow and a crime tip. Point it down and out. I would think that would be fine.

I thought I was the only one to have the tail pipe to rust out. I could not believe it was not stainless as the rest of the system is. The part is Freightliner. If you go to Freightliner PartsPro you can put in your vin and get the part number. Cost is $80. I replaced mine on my 2008 last spring. I would not run without it for fear of fire during the regen process.

I will be picking up my new Berk 38A in a few weeks. Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. Sounds like FR added a steel extension to the stainless FL portion. Since water is a product of combustion all tail pipes rust from the inside out, and rusting is more prone on short trips as the pipe does not heat enough to keep the water vaporized toward the cooler end section. Maybe I can get it changed to SS and not have to worry. Great thread. Thanks.

The heat wrap is the killer. I removed the wrap after it broke off and the entire pipe was rusted out.

I am sure that wrap does a great job of keeping all the heat and moisture up in there so it can rot everything right off!

I haven't looked at mine yet but I do know in regen that pipe will get very hot. How close is it to the fiberglass? I would think its wrapped to protect body parts from melting.
