I was searching high and low for an odd ball belt.. Had to be a gator back.
Found one online, got it here and the cardboard sleeve was so faded, could hardly tell what it was.
Sat in the sun for a long time.
Threw it on the crate engine. Perfect for years.

Changing it out every couple years will prevent dry rot.

exactly! it's just another item on the regular maintenance schedule.

You could set that belt on a shelf in a back room and come back 20 years later and it will not be dry rotten. Air will not break it down. Heat and the heat from rotation will break it down.

If you know how, you can flip fold a belt to 1/3 its length. Do it all time for band saw blades.

This is an 81" long blade full length and then folded to 1/3. Longer blades can be folded again and made to go down to 1/6th.

Phil so you are saying the information reported in this thread by people who attended the FL camp is not true? If that's the case I rely on others with supposed knowledge to enlighten me in areas I need help with. If the info is bogus why do I waste my time?

Wayne if I'm wasting your time move on. I have my opinion as did Mike at CFL. I disagreed when I sat in his class and I disagree now. I have a belt that has sat in my rear compartment since April of 2016 and it's as new as when I bought it. How is setting in a shelf out of the sunlight going to break down a rubber belt meant to take countless hours of heat and friction.
I spent a few minutes searching for shelf life. Most say store it out of the sun. Someone said 5-10 years. Non of the manufacturers had any recommendations for shelf life.

Phil my reply was not directed at you but at others that post suggestions. I have never attended camp so I have to rely on those who have. I have had belts in my trunk that have showed cracks without been installed. Maybe it was from heat in the trunk. Getting to the belt on the Berk is not easy as you know with a radiator in the way the only access is from under the coach and you've seen me I'm not tiny so not an easy task.

Wayne I'm sorry my reply was so rude and harsh. I did edit it as I thought about it. The thing is Camp FL is a good class Mike is a talker and I'm grateful for the ton of great info I got. Some of what he said is just him talking. One was the belt thing. Nothing wrong with storing the belt in a sealed bag but totally unnecessary. Unless the belt needs to be protected from dangerous fumes or subjected to fuel or oils it is not going to be damaged. Again I'm sorry for my snotty response. I can be a ass sometimes. Don't ask my wife as she will say I'm a ass most of the time. Be well see you in Goshen.

I like Diana so I won't ask her lol but I like you too. I guess I won't be at Goshen since I never heard from Frog Bob but learned today they had or have server issues. I may try a walk in at one day even if I don't camp. Think I'll go to Merritt Speedway

Correct Wayne,

If you Vaccume seal it will last for a few years - the reason for having a spare was for the Alaska group. Folks staying the the lower 48 do not need to do this - sorry for the confusion folks

Actually Mike Cody recommended the spare parts for everybody who owns a Freightliner Custom Chassis with Cummins engines. Nothing specifically noted about any Alaska group that I remember. He recommended the vacuum seal to preserve the integrity of the belt from spills, edge damage and dry rot. It was a recommendation not a requirement.
