Step Tread Adhesive

Anyone know what FR uses to stick down the treads on entry steps?

I would expect that the strip are of the peel and stick variety. This is what I have used for replacement in the past. If you are simply looking to reattach them, a good quality contact cement should do the trick.

I typically repaint the step and frame with a black tremclad paint each year. This will keep the step looking nice and will prevent the abrasive strip from peeling

I covered ours with indoor/outdoor carpet tiles 3 yrs ago and they are still sticking. Gives us good traction and keeps the dog's nails from getting caught.

Not sure Boo, but I have on bull nose molding on the second step coming off. I would suggest contact cement, I'm just not sure what's underneath yet. Whatever adhesive is on there is still tacky, that would have to be cleaned off before applying the contact cement.

I'm replacing the first two inside treads using a composite vinyl adhesive I picked up at Home Depot. Cleaning the adhesive FR uses was a chore. Used half a bottle of Goo Gone and it was still tacky. Washed both treads with Pine Sol and still sticky. Next attempt will be sand paper to get rid of the original adhesive.

Inside three steps in the stairwell.

If I use the same stuff FR used originally, I don't figure on taking up the old glue. After checking it (red gunk) it would be easier to rip out the step well assembly and just replace it. That stuff is nasty.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me; second step too!!

FWIW, and I know we all love FR, but I'd suggest NOT ordering the tread material from Andy. The one with the "lip" was $43 for ONE and the one without the lip was $36 or ONE. In fact, I suggest not ordering ANYTHING from FR if you can get it from another source.

Ordered a windshield shade motor (looks like a stick of dynamite!!) ..... Initial price quote was $177; told them I could buy direct from the shade manufactured for $115, so Andy met that price.

IMHO, pretty pricey. I know the industry thinks we area all filthy with $$$; I am NOT.

If I only used this thing a few short (camping) trips a year and maybe one 2000-3000 mile vacation, there is no way I could afford it on my current fixed income.

Back in the day, no problem....today, not so much!!

But I'm happy for those of you that can.

Take it up, clean it with paint thinner(both step material and contact point) and use a vinyl adhesive to re-apply. Easy cheap fix.

That red stuff looks like the same water based adhesive they use to assemble the roof with. it has fiber strings in it too.

If I am not mistaken the step is metal. Have you tried removing the glue using a grinder with a wire brush attachment? If there are fibers in the glue make sure to wear a mask.

There is a plywood overlay on top of the steel.

Find your self a flooring distributor near you.
They will sell you a epoxy adhesive and a stair tread cheaper than any where at a local store.
Or you can just add a piece of 1/4 underlayment to the stairs
