Stinky Slinky...

After 4 months my RhinoFLEX system is starting to leak at both ends....drips from where hose connects to the ends....gross! Anyone have a system they like and would recommend, or is this just a every 4-6 month purchase?

Thanks all!

When you buy a NEW Rhino Flex the (VERY First) thing you must do is Look in each end,if the cut off Flap is Protruding in the Exit area Unlock the Fitting and unscrew the Hose! Take a Tin Snip and Cut the Obstruction from the end of the Hose! Now Screw the Hose back into the Fitting until it is Bottomed Out,now thread the Locking Collar until it LOCKS the Fitting! This step will prevent (4) things, Hose pulling out of fitting/Hose leaking at fitting area/Crap on the inside Flap/ Owner getting REAL MAD,when any of the above Happens! Youroo!! PS These are NOT Plug & Play ready to Use when you buy them!

Ours is 3 1/2 years old 1 year in the same place no leaks and still using it. The other one we had lasted less than 6 months. I second the trimming of the hose and making sure the hose is seated on the fittings.

Nathan, you can take the ends off the hoses, clean and apply a coat of Vaseline on the hose, this will lubricate and also helps seal that area.

Youroo, has some good advise also.

Y'all are brilliant! Just went and looked inside the ends (not my finest moment). Both ends the hose is all the way screwed into the fitting HOWEVER, there is a significant 'hang nail' on both ends!!! I will not be repairing this hose! Closed the grey valve and threw the hose away! Will pick up fresh new one this morning and begin trimming away!!! Thanks again fellas!

I would be hesitant to use Vaseline on plastic parts and never on rubber parts since it reacts with many of them. Instead I would use the silicone grease you can buy in the plumbing department and is designed for this type of application.

This information would have been good to know back in my younger days. :-)

Then don't use it. Do you know what rubber, plastic and Vaseline have in common?

That may be Campin Cajin, but they are modified. When i worked for Xerox there was a special lube for plastic gears if you used vaseline or other petroleum products they became brittle. Just like nylon in parachutes if a petroleum product came in contact (oil) they were condemned it weakened the nylon even though it came petroleum. I worked in the parachute industry over 40 years.

Sorry to steal the thread, but "parachutes" reminded me of these words of wisdom. I didn't pack parachutes, but I WAS one of those "just sailors"working on helicopters.

Actually they aren't. Petroleum Jelly is hydrocarbon based as are many plastics and rubbers. This is part of the reason it damages rubber seals and some plastics. Silicone grease on the otherhand is not hydrocarbon based and is formulated such that it does not damage rubber.

You can go ahead and put Petroleum Jelly on whatever you want. Depending upon the formulation of what it is applied to it might be ok. I on the otherhand would rather spenp a couple of bucks and buy a product designed for the application and not have to worry about it.

Nathan,

OR... consider getting a Lippert WasteMaster. Yes, it is more expensive than a Rhinoflex but, in the 1 1/2 years of using this system not ONE leak or problem. This is the best Stinky Slinky out there!

Hi Bob,
Thanks for for the link. Now my Christmas shopping for Rick is done! Because you know, nothing says Merry Christmas like "Here's a new poop tube"!!

And Cajun: we have used PJelly for years too. No problems ever.

Oh Karen.... In our short tenure as full-timers I've come to learn there's nothing more exciting to RV'ers and discussing waste management. Example: I'll mention my macerating toilet and it's like telling them I have a 1,000 doughnut holes they can jump into! I've given more demonstrations of my toilet than any other part of the coach!!! It's like Haley Davidson people.... They only discuss their 'pipes'. 😜
