Surge Protector
Never having used one but reading lots of posts praising a surge protector I am wondering which to buy. Looking at Camping World I see a variety and am not sure what the difference is between a Progressive industries for 120 bucks and a Sure Guard for 340 bucks. It would be 50 amp and probably portable type to avoid the wiring and cramped space in my 2015 40RB electric compartment. Any suggestions for a guy who is not an electrician?

You want the Progressive Industries EMS and not just the surge protector. The EMS protects against surges and more (low voltage, miswiring, etc.).

Nothing else you spend money on will be as good an investment and worthy of your dollar than this thing. It's saved my bacon (in previous trailer) and is worth every penny.

I went with the 30 Amp unit from Progressive Ind.
Main reason was it mounts inside the trailer and is less likely to "grow feet" as the plug in outside units do.
Also be aware the these units (at least mine) are a little sensitive to low voltage and will not work in all campsites. You must switch to the "bypass" mode.
Once in Florida where the ground was not solid and in California where a heat wave had everybody in the park running their AC units creating a power draw.
Just heads up.

If yours is shutting down from low voltage, I wouldn't be by-passing it. You will burn your windings in your compressor and a number of other things. You have a built in minus 10% volts plus or minus to run your A/C other then that you will burn them up. Thats why they drop out, I would becareful, but as always it's your trailer not mine, just becareful is my advice......    PS: and not that you asked for it, but did A/C work for 20 years.

If you do not use the bypass, you have no power.
Wasn't aware of burning out windings or any other such components.
I guess the inverter has some protection modes that take over when the unit is in bypass because I have had no problem with the AC or any components on my 2016 model.

They are well worth $$$ after I had a surge at 2:00am and woke up and saw sparks and arcing from my washer/ dryer area trying to start a fire i added one. A faulty elec campground box will get your attention.

a portable surge protector will cost you about $200.00 and will tell you you HAD a problem... come see the fire!!
The EMS will STOP you from having the problem at the source of the electricity. Those you can find starting at $300.00 on up.
And if you have ever seen an RV fire, you will spend the extra $100.00 for your family to be safe.

LOL!!! We've been retired about a year and 80% of our RVing is still boondocking. But now you have me more worried about the other 20%. And the DW has read this thread and just informed me that we are staying home from our next trip and using that $$$$ to buy an EMS. See what y'all done!!! Thanks

I just hardwired a 50A unit in mine. I love the remote readout. I also just put in 50A service at the house and it was really interesting to see the difference in voltage drop from just one extension cord on the previous setup. I lost 9V from that cord alone on the same load. I'm much less concerned about our (seemingly) weekly power fluctuations now. Good investment considering the control board on a refrigerator is over half the cost of the EMS.

Last year while in Nashville it was very hot and humid with a full park!
I was on 30 amp and down to 102 volts, had I not had my ems id have never known and quite possibly burnt the a/c up.
