Temperature Gauge

Driving home today my temperature gauge mover over to three quarter side which showed it was running hot. I pulled over, tapped on the gauge then it returned to normal, has me perplexed. Anyone else experience this before?

Billy,
Need a little more info. Year and model Berkshire, travelling on level road or on mountains/hilly roads. Have you checked your coolant level?

2011 36, driving on I95, water pump replaced 4 months ago, coolant is fine. Gauge went back to normal after I stopped and tapped gauge.

Did you do any further driving after tapping on the gauge and if so, did the temp stay in the normal range? If so, sounds like a glitch with the gauge. My gauge fluctuates up slightly and then back to normal while driving.

After tapping the gauge, drove about 20 miles, the gauge returned to its normal place.

When I'm in doubt, I use the Freightliner display for actual temperature, I also use it for tranny temp. The display will also give an overheat warning as well as a chime warning.

That's a great idea. Thanks

If you see temperature rise again, stop, go behind the coach and feel if fan is moving a lot of air and blowing it out the back. My fan clutch failed over a 3 month period. It led to several temperature spikes and finally had to be replaced.

At what temps on the engine and transmission would the warning light and sound activate?

I haven't had a trans temp warning, but I think the coolant warning came on at 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

What driving conditions triggered the high engine temp warning? I am heading to west coast next month and will be doing alot of mountain driving from Southern California to Seattle and thru cascades.

My wife and I have traveled all over the west crossing the continental divide numerous times in a day and never came close to overheating. You'll be fine.

I second the failing fan clutch issue. I had intermittent high temps that would vanish after a stop and not recur for many miles. Usually, the coach would sit for a while, then the fan would present as an issue, only to disappear after a roadside break.

The fan eventually seized and took the serpentine belt out with it. Both were covered under an extended warranty I bought in 2014 with my pre-owned 2009 Berk BH. The total cost for the fan repair was about $2,000.

I was in a hurry to get home, had cruise set at 68 (normally run 63), Jeep Grand Cherokee in tow, and started pulling Pennsylvania mountain on a 90 degree day. I didn't watch the gauge and as I approached the top of the hill, I got the warning, backed off and the warning quickly disappeared.
