Tip 3 - Adding Kitchen Drawers

I thought this would be a timely addition to the "Doing a Remodel" thread.

Because of my DW always craving for more kitchen storage space, I made use of a lot of unused space beneath the dinette seats and the unreachable space beneath the sink.

For the dinette I piggy-backed online purchased 7-ply birch dovetail drawer boxes. I ended up with a 41 inch deep drawer under one seat and a 17.5 inch deep drawer under the other seat (see attachment "Dinette Drawers.pdf") For the large drawer, I used Knape and Vogt 30 inch/ 150lb slides (KVM-8505P30).

For under the sink counter, I installed a 36" deep x 13.75" high drawer box (note these drawer boxes can be custom made to any dimension). Also used the K & V slide. Above the drawer, there was some space left and I added a shelf. Had to devise my own latch for the drawer, since the cabinet door in no way could hold back the drawer when moving down the road.

Another item that drove my DW crazy was that there was no silverware drawer provided. For this, I got a shallow drawer box made that fit into our single large drawer beneath the cook-top. Put a couple pieces of molding on the drawers inside sides, to rest the silverware tray on. The tray sides back and forth to allow access beneath the tray and can also just be lifted out. This gives more usage to the otherwise deep drawer.

Besides my DW being driven crazy, I have been also been driven crazy with the failure of the drawer latches. What seems to save the latches is a small 0.5" x 0.75" block of wood installed as shown in the picture. This limits the side sway of the door when opening and closing. I also changed to Southco latches, which seem to be better then the originals.

Nice, working on building drawers into our pantry cabinet then will think about similar to what you have done here.
