Travel plans

I need some advice. I am taking vacation in August and can with head north west to Lake Michigan or go south to the mountains of North Carolina. Any opinions on what is the better trip?

Having lived in NC in August I would head to my home state of Michigan. West Michigan is has the best beaches. From South Haven to Mackanaw is just beautiful. Lots of fun towns to visit. Saugatuck, Grand Haven, Muskegon, Ludington, Traverse City, Petoskey all great places to visit with awesome beaches.

Michigan beaches are great. We stayed in Empire Michigan at Indigo bluffs campground. Stay in the class A section. Best campground we have been to. Nice area to explore.

Absolutely agree. Maybe the most beautiful beach anywhere.

I have to agree with Michigan and Indigo Bluffs RV resort. Great place to stay and see sleeping bear dunes. Some great resorts up by Petoski also.

We went to Michigan in 2014 and loved it. South Carolina was too hot that year.

Wisconsin is a great time to visit that time of year! Lots of Lake Michigan shoreline too!

Better sunrises but no sunsets on your side. Lol. I do need to head that way soon. I would love to see it from that side. Also Door county is in my list.

We really need to get to Michigan sometime in the future.... we have seen their commercials.... it looks great!
Whichever direction you decide on, TripAdvisor.com is great for the "Things to do" section of their website. Just type in what city you are going to and plenty of useful info comes up. We have found museums and attractions that usually don't even advertise and the "reviews" on each place help a lot.
Good Luck on making your final decision!

If your thinking about western Michigan in August, start making your reservations now, If you can still get some. Besides state parks or Private RV parks, check for county parks also. Getting sites during the week should be no problem, on the weekend it may be a crap shoot. I didn't search in western Michigan last week, but I was able to get a site for the weekend of July 29+30 at a state park and a site for the weekend of Aug 19+20 at a county park. both in Eastern Michigans thumb area. All state parks have some sites that are first come basis but not very many large enough to handle a big RV.

If your looking for full hookups, RV Parks are your best bet. Only a few state parks have full hookups but many of the county parks do.

Hope this helps, ShermanD

I can give you all the great spots when we see you at Goshen.

Michigan, by far. Beautiful west coast of Lake Michigan shoreline. The views will rival anywhere. Nice coastal towns with lots of history. If you are a beer drinker, this state has some of the best craft beers in the world. Wineries if you like wine. We have driven all over the country and have decided to just vacation here in the summer because there is so much to see and do. And this praise is coming from a Buckeye (born in Girard, Ohio)

This post saddens me. We WERE going to go visit friends in Traverse City before Goshen, but they had to cancel. I'd love to go see them, see the area again, and AVOID this heat!!! Here's what you get up there:

We live in the broke state of IL and travel to both MI and WI, with MI winning most of the time as to which state to travel to. Why?

One: Michigan has more sandy beaches and a lot of campgrounds with full hook-ups than WI.
Two: Great little towns with a lot of festivals with shopping and a lot of winery's in the area along the lake front. Not so much in WI. Most campgrounds in WI do not offer full-hooks-ups and some do not even have 50 AMP sites.

Door County WI is the exception with some campgrounds having full-hook ups and 50 amp sites. But the beach areas are for the most part are rocky or the lake seems colder than MI is. Just My $0.02

In fact we have been to MI twice so far and will be going to Traverse City in August for one more trip.

Try Poncho's Pond in Ludington MI. great private RV park with full-hook-ups and level pull-thru sites. We where just there with the grandkids two weeks ago.

Jim34RL,
Wow, that Poncho's Pond looks nice. Have not been to Luddington yet. Is there a lot to do?

Poncho is a great guy. Yes it's his real name. That park is one of our favorites. He also owns a Motorhome and understands the business.

Yes, there is. Several great beaches and a state park to visit. We also toured Amber Elk Ranch, grand kids feed the Bulls and cows ( Elk). Drove down to Silver Lake and did Mac Dunes rides on the sand dunes to name a few things to do.

Glad you enjoyed your stay. We just moved our base to Traverse City and are enjoying it so much. I grew up on Lake Michigan and never get tired of it.
