TV Recording Options

We have a Winegard Traveler Auto Sat antenna, with a VP211K receiver box, along with a Dish TV subscription. The receiver box does not have any recording capabilities. We are looking for ways to allow us to set up recordings. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should I get a new receiver box, ( What are the choices?) or is there something external that I can buy that when connected to the current receiver, would record selected programs? Appreciate any suggestions.

Get a receiver box with those capabilities, probably cheaper then after market.

With that receiver you should be able to add a hard drive. A one time fee to Dish and they will enable the DVR function. It is a pretty simple thing. A call to Dish and they can tell you what hard drive to buy.

The vip211K should have a USB port on the back. (Check and see it should be under the Ethernet port)

If it does then you can buy an external hard drive and plug it in. Once you do that, a message will come up on the TV and you will have to call Dish to activate. They charge a one time fee of $40. Then it will work just like any DVR.

If you don't have a USB port, then you will have to purchase a newer receiver (vip211z) and it will work.

I did this about a month ago and it works great.

Baddmann, thanks for the information. I will check it out, and see if this is a viable option.
