U.S. 40

I have heard folks say that US 40 is not a good road for RV's. We are contemplating going west on 40 from Oklahoma City, has anyone been on any parts of that highway to know the condition?

If you are asking about I-40, have driven it several times and nice interstate. Where west are you headed?

Live in Albuquerque and tow a 38' 5er west on 40 all the time. No problems other than an occasional construction zone. Fuel up at truck stops. If your towing around 65MPH no problem with the Arizona speed traps. We storage our trailer at the KOA on Skyline Rd in Albuquerque. Nice well equipped park with great people working there.

Last fall I picked up 40 at Amarillo, and drove it to Barstow, CA. Mostly good, with construction as mentioned. I recall the worst parts were in Arizona. When fueling, if you can, avoid the Pilot/Flying J on the west side of Albuquerque, the traffic and layout is horrible. They do have an RV island, but it is usually packed.

Around Amarillo TX it can get windy at times, ended up stuck there for 2 days due to brown outs cased by blowing winds. there were some rough spots near Kingman AZ but hopefully they have them repaired by now. Also remember in CA your speed limit drops to 55 if you are towing a toad. You will fell like your sitting still as everyone goes around you. Are you going into L.A. Area?

I-40 encompasses much of Route66. If you take your time you will be amazed by the number of historical attractions along the way.

I-40 goes from Las Vegas to the Atlantic Ocean! One of the interesting high points of traversing it in its entirety is you can go within 2 miles of my house. Waving Real Big is required!

If you go any further east than my house, expect to slow way down!!!!

If you're thinking about US 40 as opposed to Interstate 40, you're correct that much of it isn't all that great, and in some cases no longer exists.

US 40 has been largely replaced by Interstate 70 from Maryland through PA, OH (Columbus), IN (Indianapolis), IL (Effingham), MO (St. Louis to KC), KS, CO (Denver) and beyond. In some areas the old US 40 runs roughly parallel to I-70, in some parts they run together.

Routing

Interstate 40 is a major east-west freeway, spanning eight states on its cross-country voyage. Starting in Barstow, California, the freeway generally follows the Historic U.S. 66 alignment.......
Interstate 40 terminates just shy of U.S. 17 in Wilmington, terminating along with four U.S. routes (74, 76, 117, and 421) in the vicinity of that city.

Yes, they moved it while I was typing that. Barstow and Las Vegas have merged. It was on all the news. Didn't you see it?

Traveling Route 66. It starts in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica Califorina. Traveled it many times. It does follow I-40 . Thru Oklahoma it was a toll road. It's called Will Rogers Turnpike.

I've been on I-40 from Amarillo all the way to California on a motorcycle....So I know in an RV or towing will be fine.

Temecula, to visit friends and old neighbors. It's where we left from last June, we're renting our house out. Then we start heading north towards WA.
