I have a 2014 Forest River Berkshire 40BH and need new coach batteries. What are the best?

IMO, best is based on your needs. Do you boondock regularly? Do you have an electric fridge?
How often are you solely on battery power? What do you want to run while you're on it?

Picked up 4 6 volt golf cart batteries, interstate at Cosco about a year ago for $86 each which was the best deal we could fine. RV Dealers and auto parts stores wanted much more. Label and take pictures of cables before you remove the old ones. Skip

Picked up 4 L16 420 amp US battery batteries this April shipped from BatteriesASAP.com. I think it was about $950 for all delivered to my driveway

Alex,
Please give us a report after you've driven with them for a while. FR won't assure me that my battery bay is strong enough to hold L16s, which weigh twice as much as GCs.
Some people got L16s new with their Berks, so they are OK. But there is no guarantee that all the battery bays are built to the same standard.
I'm thinking of enquiring from MoreRyde about their construction standards. I understand that FR sends Berks to them to build the chassis add-ons for the bays.

I did the same thing when I had my Berk. Picked up (4) 6 volt batteries from Sams club. If you check the water once per month they will last a few years.

What kind of batteries do I need
I learned long time ago that you get what you pay for. I stay with what the manufacturer recommends. When I can’t do it myself I have someone else to do it.

Which ever you get, pair them with an automatic water maintenance system and they will be so much easier to take care of.....

Hi Gordon,
Just came back from my second trip (about 4500 miles) with L16s and I did not see an issues with the weight. I was checking the compartment and it looks fine to me.
I measured the compartment's floor and made a cutout from plywood to completely cover it. The batteries went on the plywood. I feel it distributes the weight more evenly and also protects the metal floor from the spills.

Thanks for that update info Alex. I did go onto the MORryde website and made a query on the specs for the battery bay, but they haven't responded.
When I think about it, the 500 lb of L16 batteries is not outrageously high and it seems logical that the bay should hold them.

I just installed the GC2 as we don’t rely on the batteries too much.
