Where is the power steering filter??

Anyone changed their own PS filter? Not sure where it's located.

Could be just about any place, I would start with the power steering rack.



It may look like this.

If that is not it then you will need to run the PS lines for an inline filter.

Not 100% sure but they told me that mine was in the power steering fluid resevoir.
I would start there.

Yeah, and I also found out that FL recommends you change the rear axle (differential) oil once a year; also the front wheel bearing (oil filled hubs) oil once per year.

I've NEVER changed differential oil on any car I've ever owned in the last 50 years. WTF??

Power steering resevoir on mine is near the top right corner of the radiator in the rear of the coach. It is a round white plastic cylinder.

Thanks Tom..... (smacking forehead with heel of head) never thought to look in the BACK since the steering is all done up front. I feel like and idiot!!

Often there is some sort of filter system located in the resevoirs of PS systems. Not sure ours is but as Tom has mentioned, good chance it is in there. I have also seen where they are not replaceable unless you replace the resevoirs themselves.

Is there something that says it needs to be changed/has a service interval?

Yes, it is on the 'priority' list of things that REALLY need to be attended to regularly. I have a maint schedule here; it has several items highlighted (in yellow magic marker) and I believe it was a handout at camp freightliner.

Anyhow, the PS filter is on the list of highlighed items. How accurate that list is, is not known to me, but again, I think it may have been recommended by an instructor at camp FL.

Tom, are you sure?? That looks like it could be the coolant overflow canister.

I'll have to examine it more closely. As least I know it won't be brake fluid!!!

EDIT: Never mind, Tom...... Just went out to look, and that canister is indeed the PS fluid container.

I believe that manufacturers set up these schedules to avoid doing warranty work. I don't know how to get around it but if you take it to FL for your services and they don't change those fluids, it would seem that it is only "recommended", not required. I do fleet maintenance for a living and we do not replace those fluids unless there is a failure. But as they say, YMMV!

Jeff, thanks for that info. I also have a friend who drove 18 wheeler for 42 years, always his own truck. I'm going to pick his brain next time I see him.
