50 amp vs 30 amp

Someone may have added the extra 120v cord for a separate heater or appliance. If you could get someone to help you figure out where it goes, it might still be functional. I would put a new plug on the end though:

Looks like std. 15/20 amp and 50 amp male connectors. Lot of work to replace a dogbone converter. Can't tell if factory or not. 38' certainly needs 50 amp interesting, like to see CB panel.

Same polarity to go through. In this context, it is the circuit distribution box where the beakers are and it would be very interesting to see how the two plugs are wired. I'm guessing that it is creative and not necessarily safe.

It's not that it's it "not" supposed to have both. But it wasn't from the factory with both and it was something that the previous owner added on- either by their own or they had their dealer do it.

Usually with these 120 volt add-ons, they are dedicated to a specific outlet or set of outlets inside the camper. Some people add them specifically for running high electric use items - like space heaters.

That said, you likely do not NEED to use the 120volt connection. Like I said- I doubt anything WON'T work; there will just be some outlets that won't. Your original question still stands- for a 50amp rig, what limitations are there to only having 30amps available? Of which, my original answer still stands.

You will need a 50amp to 30amp adapter like Herk showed.

Replace the plugs on the wires you have.

Chase down where the two wires go and what they power.

Decide what to do.

I personally would be concerned about your wiring till you can figure it out. On the other hand, If everything has worked well in the past, just get a 50 to 30 amp converter and see what happens. Plug in the 30 amp plug and see what works and what doesn't. What doesn't will be the circuit that the 15 amp plug powers.

Let me make one additional suggestion if you're going this route: Wrap some insulating tape around that 15-amp plug, just in case they've wired them together.

By chance, the hwh doesn't have an electric element wired directly thru that extra plug? Or an electric fireplace?

Not sure what that is but we have an extra water heater in the camper
