a/c power usage when hot

I have read several comments about a/c's requiring more electrical power to run when the outside temperature is hot. I was not aware of this. I thought they ran at a constant speed. how does the outside temperature affect how they run? do they run at a higher speed as the temperature increases? just trying to understand. thanks

They do not run at a higher speed. They have to run longer to lower the inside temperature. Actually, all you need to do is remove the humidity from inside the RV. I don't run my A/C until it gets real muggy, then I set the thermostat so it makes it comfortable inside which is usually around 80* to 85*.

They pretty much run at a constant power draw. If you put a meter on it, you'll see minor fluctuations as you would with other similar appliances. I have a Amp meter in my trailer and I'll notice amp fluctuations from time to time, but it's usually the refrigerator cycling on or off. As the outside temp changes, the AC is still going to run at the same speed using the same amount of power.
