A/C unpredictable

Today, after main A/C was working well all summer, it was set to call for 80 degrees and the inside zone 1 temp was 78. It has always been set to fan = AUTO. Yet, today it was continually running when it should have be OFF. It was only blowing air, not cooling. I shut it to OFF and then we left for 3 hours, and when back I set it to COOL again. This time the zone 1 temp was 80 and I set the A/C COOL to 78. It did run fine this time and shut off as it normally did b/4, once the zone 1 temp reached the 78 degrees. Any ideas?

Possibly an early sign of a future thermostat failure coming.

On my unit the A/C circulates with just the fan. Not sure how often.
