Adding a second AC unit

I am looking to purchase a Rockwood/Flagstaff TT and the every unit I looked at do not have the second ac, but do have a 50 Amp service and ac prep package. Every dealer wants $800 plus for the ac and the install. I have priced units on line and they range about $500 for the same unit. I just wondering how difficult it is to install the unit, since the trailers have the prep package is already in it?

Hardest part is getting it on the roof and removing a roof vent. Pull the inside cover and make sure the 120 volt romex is there first.

I didn't check the price, but sometimes that doesn't include the inside parts....that's prolly another $150

When I was at the Rally last year I received a quote of $1200.00 for the AC unit and installation.

If you could get the full unit including interior grill and controls plus installation for $800 that is probable a good deal. Otherwise you have to figure how to get a 100 lb a/c on the roof plus the weight of yourself and maybe a 2nd person. You don't want to drag it across the roof. I installed mine, with a winch attached to an overhead beam, hoisted it up in the air, backed the trailer underneath, then lowered the a/c to the roof. Other than that, just remove the vent, clean the surface well and do this before lifting the a/c. No leaks since the install.

I personally would not ad a second AC. I did and have only used 1 time, rest of time the 15,000 BTU unit took care of the needs. Turn a fan on and it all good. HOWEVER, when we bought our trailer I negotiated another AC (12,000) for $400 installed.

The Forest River Rally held in Goshen each year. The quote was from Recreational Specialties an excellent vendor.

Had a second one put in/on our 5th wheel. A Coleman (kicks ass and very low profile) and the grand total was $900.00

Paule253, it depends on where your location is as far ss climate. Im in southeast Texas and if you are camping down here in the summertime and your not in the shade, one 15k btu ac is not enough. I have a 38' 5er with 2 15k btu ac's and it takes both of them to keep it cool when its 95-100 degrees outside.

Was your 5th wheel already wired for 50 amp?

Camping World quoted me $1,100 installed for a 13,500 btu on a pre-wired FW. On my 35' FW I thought it was worth it when we were camping down south and 90-110 temps. The bedroom stayed cool to sleep.

So even $800 is a decent price installed.

When we bought our new Cherokee 304BS last year, I had the second AC installed before we took delivery. It cost an extra $1000 which included everything. It was well worth it. I also had the slide toppers for the 3 slides installed. That was 2 major projects that I will not have to worry about.

We were in FL Nov 2016 and wound up trading our 2004 Flagstaff for a 2017 Flagstaff. It had 2 AC's and 50 amp service. I'm thinking the 2 AC's in FL might be normal. So far we've hooked to mostly 30 AMP services. We find that running the 1 AC in the living area during the day then switching to the 2nd in the bedroom at night works well for us (that is on a 30 amp hookup) However we think that when the temps reach 80+ that we are going to LOVE having both AC's.

If its something you really want, negotiate it with the purchase of the camper. They may be willing to give you a break on parts, or labor or both.

I recently installed a 3rd ac unit in my camper... and did the work myself.

I checked online and from my dealer. I chose to buy from my dealer because their prices were pretty close. I don't remember the exact breakdown, however you need two parts: the top ac unit itself and the inside ceiling assembly. These two items are sold separately because the ceiling assembly is different depending on if you have an external thermostat (most main units) or the controls in the ceiling assembly (most additional ac units, but not always).

I spent right at $750.00 for both pieces. The ceiling assembly itself was like $100 or $150 so that would make the ac unit $600 to $650. All of these numbers are after tax.
