Any Ham radio operators in here?

I'm going down to take my test on Wednesday, April 4th. My pops already set me up with quite a few freebies, including a transceiver once I pass my test. While most of this stuff will be used at home, I'm looking to pick up at least an extra handheld for use in my truck while traveling and in my trailer while camping.

Just figured I'd see who's out there... Maybe see what kind of equipment you guys would recommend or if anybody had set up a radio in their trailer.

Kind of excited to post up my callsign once the FCC assigns one

Yep. Been licensed since 1986. I have a Ten Tec scout that I plan to take along this year. Planning on using a modified G5RV antenna. Good luck on the test.

Good Luck Rod!!! Been a Ham for a few years (since '85 I think) and enjoy the heck out of operating mobile and while camping. Get to act like it's Field Day every time we head out! Got some sea stories about hf ops in "disadvantaged" locations.

Let us know how it goes!

my parents are ham's - they have been in at for as long as I can remember - atleast the 80's
my father got out of it for a long time and recently picked it back up cause some one he knows showed him some handhelds and sparked his intrest again.

Good luck with the test and let us know how you did -

for my curiosity - what did you have to go thru to take the test or cost - might be intrested in doing this some day as well

You can get all of the information you could possibly need about becoming a ham at American Radio Relay League | ARRL - The national association for AMATEUR RADIO.

FINALLY, the FCC processed my app.

KJ6VSP

I set up a small dual-band mobile and mag mount Comet in my work truck, and chat with all the retired guys while I'm out driving around for work.

And I was given a basic 2M radio and antenna I put up here at the house.

WB4FSN, Good Luck with the ticket and maybe someday we can have a qso and qsl, when I think about it I can not really remember not being a Ham Radio operator. I got my first ticket in 1956 at age 9 and still have my first rig, home brew in a cigar box, have to get some pictures post of that. Had to build a new ham shack a few years ago due to all the boat anchers and other radios, wife said I have to many toys, but remember he who dies with the most toys WINS and I want to win.

Congrats on the ticket. Hope to have a QSO some day. I thought he who dies with the most toys still dies.

Yea thats true but oh what a trip. Wife still just shakes her head and tells me the differance between men and boys is the price of the toys and that a 65 year old man does not need anymore toys, then we started RVing.
