Unhappy Atwood Water Heater Problem

Has anyone had a problem with their Atwood gas/electric heater? After using it on gas for a week, I noticed that there was a black track up the side of the camper. Never had a problem like that so didn't realize how serious it was until tonight when the campground manager told me it was because the water heater gas flame isn't adjusted right and the black is from flame coming out and up the side of the camper. I already had a problem with the Atwood stove. My front burner orifice melted and flame started coming out the front of the stove. I'm wondering is this a problem with quality of this brand?
My main issue is how best to deal with this? I have the first year road side assistance. Is this something that can be fixed at the campground? I'm with my 7 dogs and cooping them up in crates in my truck for a day, or not having the camper for several days is not really an option. I pretty much need an in place fix. Also, this means I'm stuck in a campground. I was going to move up to my friend's farm tomorrow, which is free vs. paying for a campground. My thought was to call the Roadside Assistance in the morning, or Primetime or both.

How bout a local gas appliance store with service? Many have road trucks for custormer service. Brand shouldn't matter, its a burner...

Can you run it on electric until you can get a service tech to look at it?

My guess is you have a bug or spider nest in the burner flue causing an overly rich mixture in the combustion chamber.

Blowing some compressed air into the flue might clear it out. If you don't have a compressor, buy a can of "Canned Air" from the computer store or radio shack and shoot it into the flue.
