Bad Tstat

All -

Newbie here and i need help. I have a 2017 apex nano and im having a problem with my cheap Tstat . the off position is not engaging fully (ongoing issue) the tstat clicks to off but in cold weather when it hits below the coolest setting the furnace kicks on even though it should be off completely . What are my options for replacement and is it an easy task. id prefer to have something with a definitive off position as i do alot of cold weather camping

If the temperature part of the 'stat works OK you could always add an inline switch for positive shutoff of the furnace. A cheapo thermostat is nothing more than a temperature controlled on-off switch. Adding an on-off switch inline with the 'stat wires would assure a positive off position.

A photo of your current 'stat would help.

When I went to A/C school....off was off. Strange. Lowest setting was lowest setting and so forth. If you are turning it "all the way down" most digital stats only go to maybe 45 deg... normal being ?? 55 on analog/mechanical. There will be a switch somewhere with AC/OFF/Heat etc and AUTO/OFF/FAN ON give her a look

Sounds like the OP's 'off' button is intermittent. (or at least affected by the cold)

I looked it up... Does the stat only control the heat? If so a pic would help a lot

So the stat was to off... still ran as desired? I also assume you have switched it on and off several times? Next is to decide to fix/replace or tote to the dealer. You might look and see if something is blocking the off position..IE. not allowing to fully disengage. Board has moved, lever hitting something etc.

I have the same controller in my RV. Cheap, but basically functional. There are only 2 wires in the back. Very simple to replace with a better quality unit. Sounds like your switch/tstat is defective.

If I were you I would replace it with one of these T Stats.

This is the type I have and it works great.

Here's an exact replacement for $13.
Replace the 'stat and be done with it.

Suburban 161154 Thermostat.

Or this one on Amazon for $14 and free prime shipping...

pull off the cover and look to see why the contact is not breaking. It should be a simple fix. You should be able to tell it switches off when it gets to the proper place.

Pmixmaster, this issue is the universe handing you the opportunity to get rid of that crappy analog thing. Do NOT simply replace it with an identical crappy analog thing.

boondocking's post is pointing to a Honeywell RTH2410B with 5-1-1 programming for $34.98, but you can get a similar programmable RTH221B (not backlit, and only 1 weekly program) for $19.88:

Honeywell 7-Day Programmable Thermostat-RTH221B - The Home Depot

I have the non-programmable Honeywell RTH111B, at Home Depot for $24.97:

Honeywell Digital Non-Programmable Thermostat-RTH111B - The Home Depot

They're both cheaper than the heat-only version you posted. (I can't figure out why the non-programmable is $5 more than the programmable, though!)

To wire it, just hook one of your wires to the "R" connection and the other wire to the "W" connection. Voila! Much better control of temperature.

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions i love boards like this where people actually help. Onto the next dumb question... as my t stat would only need to control heat i notice these are battery operated the current one is seemingly hard wired to the trailer is there a separate power line in ? i ask cause during my hunt this last weekend that is the only dam way i could get the heater to turn off when it got below the 50 mark on tstat lowest setting so it was being powered by the 12 v system . I know the replacement will run on an outside battery source but will i hvae extra wires >?

No, you will not have any extra wires. There should only be 2 wires connected to the old stat.
