Broken outside flap for range hood exhaust

I included a pic so you can see what I'm referring to. In the pic, i have it locked down with those little rotating tabs so it's still up there, but if i unlock it, it falls down and out because its little hinge tabs have broken off.

What's the best solution for fixing that? Just leave it alone and never open it? Key it fall out and forget it? I don't really want wasps getting up in there! Awe

Replacement flap may be available but the whole vent if probably $15. The flap will flap in the wind during transit if not locked down and will exit fairly quickly.

There are (were?) after market flaps made of aluminum. Had one on my Roo for at least 15 years -- yep, the original one flapped itself off somewhere along the road.

Here is a permanent fix which you can do easily since you still have your old flap.
See my post 5 for step by step with photos.

Thanks y'all for the tips. Guess I'll just have to get out there and see if I can rig it up, and if not, consider replacing the whole cover.

we had a similar issue in Sydney Nova Scotia and were able to buy a replacement vent cover for approx $20 at the local RV dealer. You will also need some putty tape

Here is another example of 'fixing' the flap as opposed to replacing...

White and black flaps should be available at an RV Dealer, or as suggested, you can buy a new vent cover. The reason it breaks is because the tabs weren't turned to lock the flat down before traveling down the highway.

I used a section of wire coat hanger along the top of the flap to replace the pins. Held in place by metallic tape.

Uh......putting on my 'sheepish' face........
Had no idea this thing could be locked down. In 3 years, I've never done anything to it. It bounces and makes noise if you walk around inside anywhere near the kitchen slide. Just life, I figured.

So, I asked a tech person. They said you can lock it down (didn't say how), but if you forget, it won't allow any venting to occur.

But honestly, I had no idea it could be locked down. Heck, I couldn't reach mine without a ladder..........

Some of the newer models are more difficult to lock down. Turn tabs were eliminated and you have to press on the flap to get it to snap in a couple of places along the bottom.

Yep. My 2017 has the “press tabs”. They suck. I press it down (one on each lower corner), hear a pop, let go of the flap, and holds for about two seconds before that stupid flap pops back open.[emoji35]

Here's the replacement (white). $10.49 at Amazon. The black one is a little harder to find and costs twice as much. But it won't turn yellow in a year like the white ones do.

Vent Flap

The vent flap on my trailer has broken twice. The first time I most likely did not close the latches. The second time the latches were secure and it broke anyway. My solution was to do nothing regarding a second replacement. I close the flap when the trailer is not in use and take the flap out when camping and using the kitchen stove.

Thanks a lot everyone. I've learned a lot about those flaps from reading this thread, and there are a lot of great potential solutions.

I knew i could rely on the great folks on this forum to help me. Now if i could get y'all to check out my leaky air conditioner thread too [emoji16]

Actually, the new style is just as easy, although for some reason most campers can't seem to figure them out.

You put one thumb on each tab, the push up and out at the same time and they open right up!

I actually did a mini seminar on how to open them up at a camping rally a couple of years ago.

Opposite of opening...

Press each tab up...close the vent then release the tabs in the closed position.

Slamming them shut will break the tabs over time...as it sounds like you found out!
