can I pull the factory stereo and install a car head unit?
wondering how these stock units work?
I have a higher end car head unit that I'd like to make use of, if possible, and swap out the 4 indoor speakers to higher quality ones as well as install 2 marine speakers outdoors, selectable via a switch if so desired.
the head unit i'm looking to use has usb support and an aux in that I can use for my sirius and streaming from the internet occasionally.
is this something that is doable? or are these factory stereos only upgradable to newer models?
thanks

What you seek is doable!
Be ready for the rats nest of wires behind your current unit

Yes, the factory units run on 12 volts, so it can be done.

I did the exact same thing you want to do! I`ll get some pics of what I did. very easy to do. wired just like a car except for the rats nest of wires someone already mentioned. if you`ve wired up a car before, it`s very easy.

Keep in mind that if your existing unit is also the DVD player (like many of the Concertone units), then you loose the video capability switching to an auto-style stereo.

most likely a better set up for a collection of wires behind the unit with your set than the factory set up. Mine was a giant mess so I used plastic speed straps to bind all the lines and vacumed out about a pound of wood chips.
