Even if you have no TV hooked up, when you insert a DVD, give it a minute or so, the display will show a bit of info, like track/chapter number and a timer, this will indicate that it is reading correctly. You must have a DVD movie at home, try it. Worth a shot. If nothing appears on the display, or says cannot read it - something is wrong.
You will also get the audio of the movie. I use it all the time for musicals I have on DVD just to listen - not to watch, e.g. Leonard Cohen Live in London for example, it's a DVD but I only want to listen.
