Is there a less expensive alt. to a fan tastic fan. Maybe something that will mount in the existing vent frame.

As Ace said, there are all kinds of fans that will fit that 14" x 14" opening.

I will say that once you've been used to a Fantastic Fan, you won't be happy with anything else.
