Hey Herk, here is an update on my radio issue. Panel came off like you said and when I pulled the radio and all the wires (which is in abundance) I found a large mouse nest made of paper towels and facial tissues. The only wire I found chewed was the FM radio antenna cable which I repaired. Checked both blade fuses and they were both good. Checked for power with a 12V test light and had power everywhere it should be. Scratching my head I checked the wire harness's that go into back of radio and what do you know, radio came on. Made sure all was secure and mounted radio back. Thanks again for you advice. We are heading for Hueston Woods State park in Ohio soon and was hoping to have system up and running. Thanks again!!!

Hey Herk, You are like a walking, trouble shooting manual. I'm astonished of you knowledge on these problems, You always seem to give the right way and advice...Thanks for your input all the time. I'm always learning something from your post. ( do not mean to give you a big head ) but THANK YOU

Too true. I remember the TV technician making house calls when I was a kid (hold cow talk about old) and saying that hitting the cabinet to "knock parasites off the cathode ray tube" was an acceptable practice and that will still be 20 bucks...

I really do like learning about this machine we call an RV. Whenever someone finds I fix I file it in some of those vacant (aircraft only) brain storage cells.

I had mine out to try to find a 12V source for something else, and man, what a bunch of wiring to that thing!

It had been "permanently" connected to the trailer wiring by those clamshell splice things that bite through the insulation and you squeeze with a pair of pliers. As an aviation electronics guy for nearly 40 years, those things give me the creeps. Plus, as I was digging around for my power source, some of those wires started coming loose.

So last weekend I spent a couple hours removing each and every one of those silly things and doing the splice properly, with solder and heat-shrink tubing. I also labeled both sides of every connector so that now I not only won't have those nasty little things causing trouble, I can remove the whole unit if I need to work back there.

Some people swear by those splices. I swear AT them. They're great, IMO, for a temporary repair to get you home; I don't believe in them for a permanent installation, though.

True statement.

Years ago, I had to maintain a half-dozen aviation radio beacons (non-directional beacons, to you pilot types) in the Colorado mountains. They were old enough that I think Orville and Wilbur found their way to Kitty Hawk with them. Anyway, a "percussion adjustment" was exactly what it took sometimes to get those tubes glowing and working again.

I was valedictorian at my school, the "Bigger Hammer School of Airplane Maintenance". Our motto was, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, YOU DIDN'T HIT IT HARD ENOUGH".

Does anyone have a picture of a blade fuse for those of us who are not electronically inclined?
