Bob,
I'm trying to find the antenna. It isn't mounted on the roof outside. It must be in the cab over. I was told by the dealer that it had an internal antenna! They had verified that with Forest River. I gave up!!
thanks Dave

Go get an antenna fro the local auto parts store (around $10) and plug it into the radio. you don't need to mount it to try it. If the radio starts working you have a bad antenna...

you now antennas are pretty straight forward, but you can find stories here about bad antennas.

When i first got here, I had one guy who had four radios replaced and the dealer just told him how bad our radios were an he just kept telling everyone here the same thing. Finally through the help of others here as well he discovered that the antenna did not even have a connector on it. Until he posted a picture of it he did not know it was not correct.

My suggestion is the way you can check it without any technical knowledge and quickly. Its a simple test and the results will guarantee you what the problem is - either the antenna or the radio. Looking at the antenna or cable itself won't tell you anything as it could be broken internally or simply defective. How many times have you heard of a simple, low cost part bringing down a whole system?

I know its a hassle and you just want to listen to the radio and enjoy your RV - I really do get it! But there can be more than one thing that is causing issue and someone must troubleshoot it...

I'll help where I can!

Thumbs up

I just received my Tune Tracker Antenna (TTA), here are the tests I did. First I connected the TTA and scanned for a weak station, then disconnect the TTA and reconnected the roof antenna and the reception was not as good as the TTA, could hardly hear the station. I then found a station with the roof antenna where in silent periods I could hear background noise, then I connected the TTA and in silent periods could not hear that background noise. So with my tests the TTA was a better antenna than the roof antenna, and the TTA was on the inside near an outside wall.

ZX-500 overheat?

Bob- what do you do if it's heat related??? I have an 07 Rockwood 8287SS, and the ZX-500 is wall mounted in an enclosed cabinet. Radio works for 10 mins or so, then goes staticky. CD will play clearly for hours. I replaced the antenna head, leaving the original wire. Troubleshooting-wise, because the radio works fine for 10 mins, that would eliminate the antenna, no?

Thanks for any insight you might provide!! -Mark
