Dead television...

Shortly after its second birthday, the 32" Toshiba television which came with our 2013 Windjammer has apparently given up the ghost. After setting up this past trip, I went to turn it on to check the weather report/radar for the evening and realized the little red standby light was not on. When the television did not come on via either the remote or the manual power button on the unit, I unplugged it and plugged a clock radio into the receptacle, which was working fine. Not sure what happened, but she appears to be gone.

Our televisions at home seem to last forever. This one probably had not been used 80 hours yet, but it does have about 5,000 miles of travel on it. I am wondering whether this a common occurrence with televisions in TTs (between the unavoidable vibrations and beating which electronics take while towing and the temperature extremes they suffer being closed up in the stored TT in the heat of summer and cold of winter). What is your experience. Would you say this was an unusual occurrence?

We have the same tv in 2012 V-Lite 30WFKSS 3rd season still going strong.

We have traveled about 10k miles but the TV is mounted over the front axle.....it is 2 yrs old....and so far works great....we use it about 6-8 mo out of the year....while snowbirding.....it is the 32 " Toshiba....also have 19" in basement but don t watch it much.....also Toshiba....I would hate to have one in the back of the trailer while traveling the road in LA and couple other places.....talk about bounce....LOL

Have heard of other early failures of Toshiba sets usually just after warranty. Agree with you the Seismic vibes it takes just tears them up. Noted people going to Samsung as a replacement.

Our dealer told us to be sure to bring the TV in the house over the winter. It has been discussed on one of the forums about TVs there is a extreme temp. recommendation (high & low) not to exceed put out by the manufacturers. As it will shorten the life.

Are you powering it with a 12v inverter when you don't have 120v?
The cheaper inverters (square sine wave) don't place nice with electronics.

I had the same problem when i just got the trailer, found out that the area of the rca plugs had a bad solder joint. that they had a run of got the trailer in feb 2012. they replaced the TV. Seems it was a heat problem in that area. The specs say it needs to be 4" off the wall mine was 1" so it heated up and then gone. new bracket and TV was installed. No problems since.

I brought my TV set from Costco in late 2010 and it still working fine. Have you try testing the TV in your house?

Try popping off the back and look for loose or separated connectors. Things like the power to the back lighting not being hooked up will result in many TV's not powering up. Also if you are electronics technical you might look for components that have broken leads. This is a fairly common failure for electronics of all types that receive a lot of vibration.

In our 2011 Sabre we had the Toshibi to work one day and not the next. TV repair person replaced the power supply about a year ago. Have not had a problem since.

Lee, when I over shocked my whole trailer two years ago (you know the story, I don't need to go into the details again on the forum--rather embarrassing) the TV was fried. It was replaced and the dealer gave me the old unit back. Turns out it was just a fuse and that TV now sits in our den and is watched daily. Hope it's that simple to fix.

Good suggestion about the potential for a fuse in the tv, davidjb. I'll dig into that, especially in light of the experience Randy (Old car) reported after your comment.

Thanks, Oaklevel. I wondered about that. Nobody suggested it to me. Not sure what the standard advice is on that point. I probably should do a little research.

Good question abjb, but we have never attempted to power it up except on 120V.

It's been awhile, so I should report back as promised. I opened up the back of the Toshiba and easily found and replaced the internal fuse which davidjb and Old Car had suggested might be an easy fix. No luck with that, though, so the problem is apparently something else. I also looked around at the electronics while it was open and it was apparent to me that searching for loose or separated connectors and broken leads as keith_h suggested is really beyond my pay grade (I am not electronics savvy). Therefore, I just bought a 32" Samsung to replace it for about $220 at Target. Hopefully this one lasts a little longer, as tv repair is apparently not my thing. Moving on...thanks, everyone!
