Direct TV Questions

Here is my situation. Been having problems with a couple of the channels freezing and then to just black screen. This started this past summer and has gotten progressively worse to the point that we can not watch these channels. It happens on just 2 or 3 channels. The rest work fine. I thought it must be something with the receiver so I called Direct tech support and a technician came out. He told me that the connectors on the dish were failing. I have the 18" round dish that folds up into its own case. This dish has served me very well for SD signals traveling all over the country going on 6 years now but apparently is no longer available.

It looks like I will need to purchase a new dish and I would like to keep the price under $400. My problem is that I don't know what to purchase. There are a lot of rumors that Direct will be eliminating SD signals in the spring. If I purchase an SD dish now will it still work when Direct TV makes their changes? Even the tech doesn't know exactly what Direct will do. They are not letting much information out about the changes. I really can't afford to spend $400 now and then have to make changes the spring.

Even though we have had Direct TV for over 10 years I'm not adverse to switching to Dish TV if Direct TV becomes to much of a hassle or too expensive. Is there still a dish out there that can receive both Direct and Dish?

You didn't specify what model receiver you have, but if it's a H25 series or above you can opt for a DirecTV portable SWiM dish kit for RV's. They run anywhere from $110 - $130 on Amazon. If you desire to have one of those R2D2 types, then yes you're going to spend $400+.

The internet portion is already in place, and AT&T also provides DirecTV service through your phone line.

What the article said was they would do away with the dish. Send you a box, hook it up to your internet and watch. No need to send a truck out to mount a dish and set it up. Money saving.

Next up is Verizon coming out with 5G. Landline and DSL will go to the way side. They already have a phone to use that looks like a land line but is a cell. Wonder what data cost will be after its up and running? We have NIMBYs here that didn't want a cell tower built and in the next breath grumble about cell service! Wait till there is 5G and they can't get reception!

Sorta like like DirectTV NOW. I use it all the time connected to either an AT&T or Verizon hotspot receiver, depending on which one has the better signal.

Ever since DirecTv changed their schedule and program list layout there has been many new problems with things that you would think would have nothing to do with a simple list of recorded programs and the channel guide. However, there are complaints all over the internet regarding the many anomalies associated with the change. In most cases, the fix is to reset the main box with the red reset button (not a box refresh) and everything will begin to work normally, but this only works for a short while. Rinse and repeat.
